Tuscany is an underrated racket destination. Play an early set among the cypresses, taste Brunello at noon, and return to court once the heat drops. Many hotels advertise tennis that is really a club down the road. For this guide I only kept properties with their own courts on site, checked against hotel and recent 2026 sources.

The best luxury hotels in Tuscany with their own tennis courts

Tuscan hotels rarely publish court surfaces, so where a detail could not be confirmed I say so. If surface matters to you, ask before booking.
1. Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, Montalcino
Castiglion del Bosco sits on an estate of around 5,000 acres near Montalcino, on the edge of the Val d’Orcia, and it is one of the most complete sporting resorts in Tuscany. There are two tennis courts on the estate, and several of the private villas come with a court of their own. Surface, floodlights and coaching are not published, so ask the hotel when you book. The real headline is the private 18-hole course designed by Tom Weiskopf, where hotel guests can reserve a limited number of tee times with a handicap certificate.

Off court there is the estate’s Brunello winery, a spa using products from the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. Note that the hotel closes for winter, roughly from early January to mid-March, though villas can be rented year-round. See our Montalcino wine guide.
Best for: couples or families who want tennis, golf and serious wine in one place without ever getting in the car.

2. Castello di Casole, A Belmond Hotel, Casole d’Elsa
Belmond’s Tuscan estate occupies a medieval borgo in the hills between Siena and Volterra, surrounded by oak woods. It has the most structured racket offer in the region: a sports area with tennis, padel and pickleball, and a programme developed with LUX Tennis that includes private coaching, group clinics and a “Beat the Pro” challenge. The number of courts and the surface are not published, so confirm them directly.

Away from the court there is a heated infinity pool looking towards Siena, the Essere Spa set in the old wine cellars. Castello di Casole is seasonal: in 2026 it stays open until 29 November, then closes for winter.
Best for: players who want proper coaching and like to mix tennis with padel or pickleball.

3. Il Borro, San Giustino Valdarno
The Ferragamo family’s estate in the Valdarno, between Florence and Arezzo, wraps a restored medieval village in vineyards and olive groves. It has two tennis courts set in the countryside, both floodlit, so you can save your match for the cooler evening hours in July and August. Professional instructors are available for lessons. The surface is not stated, so ask the hotel.

Il Borro also has a three-hole practice golf course, a five-a-side pitch, yoga, e-bikes, its own wines and farm-to-table restaurants. Florence is around an hour away by car.
Best for: active travellers who like to play late and want a broad sports menu beyond tennis.
4. COMO Castello del Nero, Tavarnelle Val di Pesa
A historic castle in the Chianti hills between Florence and Siena, Castello del Nero is the closest true country resort to the city on this list. Its tennis court is laid with artificial turf and sits among cypress trees. Guests can book it free of charge every day from sunrise, with rackets and chilled water provided. There is also a padel court. Floodlights and coaching are not confirmed.

The COMO Shambhala spa is one of the best in Tuscany, with a heated outdoor vitality pool, and there is a 25-metre pool, a wine cellar for tastings and the La Torre restaurant. For more on the surrounding wine country, see our guide to Chianti Classico.
Best for: a tennis and spa break within easy reach of Florence.

5. Borgo San Felice Resort, Castelnuovo Berardenga
Borgo San Felice is an entire hamlet turned into a hotel, in the southern part of Chianti Classico about 20 minutes from Siena. The San Felice group farms some 685 hectares across its three estates, 188 of them vineyards, and it has two tennis courts with equipment available. Surface and lighting are not published, so check with the resort.

Between sets there is a heated outdoor pool among the vineyards, the Botanic Spa with vinotherapy treatments, and the San Felice winery on the doorstep.
Best for: wine lovers who want a quiet court and village atmosphere close to Siena.

6. Castelfalfi (formerly Toscana Resort Castelfalfi), Montaione
Castelfalfi is a restored hilltop village with a castle, a hotel, a former tobacco factory converted into rooms, about an hour from Florence and Pisa airport. The estate has tennis and padel courts. Exact numbers and surfaces vary between sources, so confirm them when you book.

Golf is the other draw: Castelfalfi has 27 holes across two courses, although the course is reported to be closed for redevelopment until early 2027, so check its status. There are several pools, and the RAKxa spa has a heated pool that runs from indoors to an outdoor infinity edge. One review describes that pool as adults-only, but the resort does not say so clearly, so ask if it matters. Combine it with a morning in San Gimignano.
Best for: mixed groups where some play tennis or padel and others want the spa, with golf to come once the course reopens.
7. Argentario Golf & Wellness Resort, Porto Ercole
On the southern Tuscan coast, among cork oaks and olive trees on Monte Argentario, this Autograph Collection resort has the best dedicated racket club of any hotel in the region: the Argentario Tennis & Padel Club, with two tennis courts and two padel courts, with courses for all levels. Surface and floodlights are not stated, so ask the resort.

The resort also runs PGA National Italy, an 18-hole championship course with a driving range, plus indoor and outdoor pools and a large wellness centre. The beaches and the lagoon town of Orbetello are less than 5 km away. Read our guide to Porto Santo Stefano and Monte Argentario for boat days and seafood.
Best for: padel fans and anyone who wants tennis, golf and the sea in one stay.

8. Hotel Il Pellicano, Porto Ercole
Il Pellicano is the Argentario’s glamorous cliffside hideaway. It has a single tennis court, and a personal trainer can be booked through the hotel’s wellness centre if you want a hitting partner or a session. Surface and floodlights are not published. Tennis is an extra here rather than the main event.

There is a heated seawater pool on the rocks, a private rocky beach reached by a panoramic lift, and the starred Il Pellicano restaurant. The hotel is seasonal, with its main season running roughly from spring to October, so check opening dates before planning an early spring or late autumn trip.
Best for: couples who want a morning set followed by a long, elegant day by the sea.

Charlotte’s tip: book the court with the room
Tuscan resorts usually have only one or two courts, and in June the 8am slot disappears fast. Ask for a standing early slot for every morning of your stay when booking the room, and arrange any coach or hitting partner in advance. Cancelling a slot costs nothing; playing at 3pm in July costs a lot.
Playing tennis in Florence: historic clubs and city courts

Central Florence’s grand hotels do not have their own courts, so city stays mean playing at a club. Members get priority, so ask your concierge to book a few days ahead.
- Circolo del Tennis Firenze 1898: founded in 1898 inside the Cascine park, west of the historic centre, and one of the oldest tennis clubs in Italy. It has ten clay courts, padel courts and a striking pool designed by architect Gherardo Bosio.
- Match Ball Firenze Country Club: 16 courts on the Arno just outside the city, set among lawns and olive trees, with coaches for private lessons. Guests at nearby Villa La Massa can play here, as the villa has no courts of its own.
- Circolo Tennis Carraia and ASSI Giglio Rosso: two smaller, long-established clubs with clay courts close to the city centre.

Combining tennis with wine and golf in Tuscany

The rhythm of a Tuscan tennis trip: sport morning and evening, wine and long lunches in between.
- Tennis and Brunello: base yourself at Castiglion del Bosco, play early, then visit Montalcino producers in the late morning. Add a drive through the Val d’Orcia on a rest day.
- Tennis and Chianti: Castello del Nero and Borgo San Felice put you between Florence and Siena, with dozens of wineries within half an hour. If you would rather not drive after tastings, book one of the best wine tours from Florence with a driver.
- Tennis and golf: Castiglion del Bosco, Castelfalfi and the Argentario resort all pair courts with full golf courses. Our guide to golf in Tuscany covers the courses in detail.
If you enjoy this kind of trip, the lakes are the natural next step: see our guide to the best tennis courts on Lake Como, or head north to our tennis hotels on Lake Garda.
When is the best season for tennis in Tuscany?
The best months are May, June and September into early October. July and August are very hot inland, often above 33 degrees, so plan to play before 10am or after 6pm, and favour a floodlit court such as Il Borro’s or a coastal resort where the sea breeze helps. Several of the best properties close in winter, including Castiglion del Bosco (early January to mid-March) and Castello di Casole (from the end of November in 2026), and the coastal hotels are mainly summer operations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Tuscan hotels have padel courts?
Among luxury properties, Castello di Casole (Belmond), the Argentario Golf & Wellness Resort, Castelfalfi and COMO Castello del Nero all offer padel on site. The Argentario resort has two dedicated padel courts next to its two tennis courts.
Can I play tennis in Florence as a visitor?
Yes, but usually through a club. The historic Circolo del Tennis Firenze 1898 in the Cascine and the large Match Ball Firenze Country Club are the most popular options. Ask your hotel concierge to book, as members get priority.
Are the courts free for hotel guests?
It depends on the hotel. COMO Castello del Nero lets guests book its court free of charge, while coaching, clinics and racket hire are normally charged extra elsewhere.
Do I need to bring my own racket?
Not necessarily. Some hotels, such as Castello del Nero, provide rackets, and resorts with coaching programmes usually have equipment to borrow. Serious players should still bring their own racket and shoes suited to the surface, so ask the hotel which surface it has.
