Lake Garda is the Italian lake for people who cannot sit still. Windsurfers launch from Torbole at dawn, cyclists grind up the Monte Baldo switchbacks, and on the terraces above the water you hear the steady pop of tennis balls from April until the first autumn chill. Yet several of Garda’s most famous addresses have no court at all. We checked the facilities hotel by hotel, and this is the shortlist that actually lets you play on site.

Why Lake Garda Works So Well for Active Travellers

Garda is Italy’s largest lake, and it behaves like two different places. The southern basin around Sirmione, Desenzano and Lazise is broad, gentle and surrounded by vineyards and low hills. The northern end around Riva del Garda, Torbole and Limone is a narrow fjord walled in by limestone cliffs, and it has the strongest sports culture of any Italian lake. Reliable thermal winds (the morning Pelèr from the north and the afternoon Ora from the south) made Torbole a sailing and windsurfing capital, and that outdoor energy spills into everything else: climbing, mountain biking, trail running and, yes, tennis.
For a tennis traveller this has practical benefits. Clubs are used to visitors and take short bookings. The climate is mild, so the outdoor season runs from spring to late autumn, and golf, spas and Bardolino and Lugana wine are never far away. For the broader picture, see our Lake Garda guide to Sirmione, boat trips, wine and spas.
The Best Luxury Hotels with Tennis Courts on Lake Garda
1. Quellenhof Luxury Resort Lazise (Lazise, east shore)
If tennis is the main reason for your trip, start here. In the hills above Lazise, tennis is treated as a real programme rather than a garden amenity. There are two hard courts, which the resort describes as joint friendly, plus two padel courts. Private lessons with the resident tennis pro, partner training, children’s courses and multi-day tennis camps can be booked, and tennis equipment is lent free of charge. The resort also works with the European Tennis Academy for pre-season preparation, and the mild climate means play is possible from roughly January to November.

Beyond the courts you get an infinity pool looking over the lake and a large spa. Lazise’s walled old town is a short drive down the hill.
Best for: keen players who want coaching, padel and a structured tennis week.

2. Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort (Riva del Garda, north shore)
Set in a seven hectare botanical park on the Riva lakefront, Du Lac et Du Parc is the classic grand hotel of the northern lake, built for active guests. The resort has one red clay tennis court with lessons available on request from a qualified instructor (individual or two-person sessions, from age eight), and court hire without a coach costs around 25 euros per hour. A newer padel court and a beach tennis and beach volleyball court sit in the park, with rackets and balls available free at reception.

There is also an on-site sailing school, e-bike hire, the Armonia spa, two heated outdoor pools (one semi-Olympic) and an indoor pool. The resort is seasonal: it closes from around mid-November and reopens in spring.
Best for: clay lovers who also want sailing, cycling and the dramatic northern scenery.

Charlotte’s tip: play early in the north
In Riva, book your court for 8 or 9 in the morning. The air is calm, and when the Ora picks up after lunch you can swap your racquet for a sail.
3. Villa Cortine Palace Hotel (Sirmione, south shore)
Villa Cortine is the most romantic address on this list: a neoclassical villa in a five hectare park of centuries-old trees, statues and fountains on the Sirmione peninsula yet sheltered from the day-trip crowds. The tennis court is set within the park and is free for hotel guests. The court is clay; lesson details are not published, so ask the hotel when you book.

Elsewhere there is an outdoor pool among the olive trees and a private lakeside sun deck and pier. Outdoor facilities are seasonal, so confirm opening dates for early or late trips.
Best for: couples who want one gentle match a day in a grand old park.

4. Garda Hotel San Vigilio Golf, formerly Chervò (Pozzolengo, south of the lake)
Set in the morainic hills a few kilometres south of Sirmione, Garda Hotel San Vigilio Golf (renamed from Chervò Golf Hotel in December 2023) is first and foremost a golf resort, with 36 holes made up of 27 championship holes and a nine-hole executive course. The official website lists two tennis courts with a synthetic grass surface and lessons on request (one booking platform shows a single court). Booking platforms also mention five-a-side football and beach volleyball, which the official sports page does not list, so ask the hotel.

The San Vigilio spa covers around 1,000 square metres and includes a heated indoor saltwater pool, with two seasonal outdoor pools.

5. Hotel Villa del Sogno (Gardone Riviera, west shore)
Above Gardone Riviera, Villa del Sogno is a historic villa in a 35,000 square metre park that slopes towards the lake. It has a single outdoor tennis court, a panoramic saltwater pool with a large sun deck and a summer terrace restaurant. It is an intimate lake hotel rather than a sports resort. For surface and floodlights, ask the hotel.

Best for: a quiet, classic villa stay with a court in the garden.

6. Eden Reserve Hotel (Gardone Riviera, west shore)
Eden Reserve takes a very different approach: contemporary villas, many with their own private pool and some with a sauna, scattered across a hillside above Gardone. Booking platforms list a tennis court on the estate, though the hotel does not promote it, and there is an outdoor overflow pool and a spa with a heated indoor pool. Ask the hotel about surface and coaching.

Best for: privacy, families and small groups who prefer a villa to a hotel room.

7. Park Hotel Imperial (Limone sul Garda, north-west shore)
About 600 metres from Limone’s lemon houses and lanes, this five-star hotel is best known for its TAO wellness centre, with an indoor pool, a heated outdoor pool, saunas and a Turkish bath. Guests also have access to a tennis court. Ask the hotel about surface, hours and any court fee.

Prefer the sporty north? Riva del Garda has the strongest mix of tennis clubs, sailing and cycling on the lake.
Famous Garda Hotels Without Their Own Court
A surprising number of the lake’s best-known luxury hotels do not have a tennis court on site, so do not book them for tennis alone. Based on their published facilities, Lefay Resort & Spa in Gargnano, Grand Hotel Fasano in Gardone Riviera, Villa Feltrinelli in Gargnano, Lido Palace in Riva del Garda and Cape of Senses in Torri del Benaco list no court of their own, and Splendido Bay in Padenghe lists tennis only off site. Palazzo Arzaga is superb for golf but does not advertise tennis. All of them remain wonderful places to stay; simply plan to play at a local club instead.
Tennis Clubs on Lake Garda Open to Visitors

Even if your hotel has no court, the north of the lake is well served by clubs that welcome visitors for an hour or two.
- Circolo Tennis Riva, Riva del Garda: five clay courts across two sites. The two courts at Casina delle Magnolie (Viale della Liberazione) are open all year and covered in the colder months, while the three courts at Centro Tennis Brione (Via della Cipriana) open from 1 April to 31 October. Courts can be booked online or through the club’s booking app.
- Alto Garda Tennis, Limone sul Garda: three red clay courts at Via Fasse, plus a newer padel court lit for evening play. Coaching, a fitness trainer and a ball machine can be booked, and the snack bar has lake views.
- Hotel guest access: several Riva and Gardone hotels without courts have arrangements with nearby clubs, so ask your concierge before you book anywhere independently.
Clay dominates around the lake, which is kind on the knees after a day of cycling.
Combine Tennis with Golf and Valpolicella Wine

One of Garda’s great strengths is how easily tennis slots into a wider sporting and gastronomic trip. The southern hills hold some of Italy’s best golf: Garda Hotel San Vigilio Golf, Palazzo Arzaga with its 27 holes (an 18-hole course by Jack Nicklaus II and a nine by Gary Player), and Ca’ degli Ulivi above Garda town. Our guide to golf on Lake Garda covers each course in detail.
From the east shore, Valpolicella is less than half an hour away. A morning on court, then Amarone in a family cellar: hard to beat. See our Valpolicella and Amarone wine tours and the wider Verona, Valpolicella and Lake Garda guide for routes and cellars.
Charlotte’s tip: split your stay
Spend four nights in the north (Riva or Limone) for clay, sailing and cycling, then three nights in the south (Lazise or Sirmione) for golf, wine and lazier lake days. The drive between the two takes about an hour along the eastern shore.
Best Time for Tennis on Lake Garda
- April and May: fresh, green and uncrowded. Most seasonal hotels and outdoor clubs reopen around Easter.
- June: long evenings and warm water, ideal for combining tennis and swimming. Book early.
- July and August: hot and busy. Play before 10am or after 6pm.
- September and early October: the sweet spot. Warm days, cool mornings, harvest time in the vineyards.
- November to March: many lakeside hotels close (Du Lac et Du Parc, for example, shuts from mid-November). Longer-season options include Quellenhof Lazise (play from roughly January to November) and the covered courts at Circolo Tennis Riva.
