Hotel Villa del Sogno is the kind of Lake Garda hotel people imagine before they arrive: a neoclassical villa built in 1904 for a German textile industrialist, set on the hillside above Gardone Riviera in a 35,000 m² park of olive trees, cypresses and flowering terraces that fall away towards the water. It is small, family run and quietly old-fashioned: no big spa, no starred restaurant, but a superb terrace, a panoramic pool and a tennis court in the garden. My one-line verdict: arguably the most romantic classic villa stay in Gardone, for couples who value atmosphere over facilities.

With only around 30 rooms, the front lake view rooms and the junior suites with terrace sell out early for May, June and September. Compare dates before you commit.
Location and getting there

Gardone Riviera is one of the most elegant small towns on the Brescia side of the lake, with palm trees, a lakeside promenade and D’Annunzio’s estate, the Vittoriale degli Italiani. Villa del Sogno sits on the hillside at the northern end of town, in the Fasano area, above the lake road. That raised position gives the terrace and pool their wide views towards Salò and the Veronese shore.
The flip side is that you are not on the waterfront. Expect slopes and steps in the park, and a short drive or a downhill walk to reach the lake. Booking partners say the hotel runs a free shuttle to the centre of Gardone, which helps in the evening. Parking is free.
Verona Villafranca is the most practical airport, roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes by car along the southern shore depending on traffic. Milan Bergamo is roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, and the nearest railway station is Desenzano del Garda, about 25 km away. Ask the hotel about its airport shuttle; a car is useful for golf and exploring.
Rooms and suites
This is an intimate hotel. Most UK and German tour operators, and Tripadvisor, list 32 rooms and suites, and one operator breaks that down as 27 bedrooms and five suites. Other booking platforms quote 30, 31 or 35 rooms, and the official website does not publish a total. Our research turned up contradictory information here, so if the exact size matters to you, ask the hotel. Rooms are furnished individually with period pieces and antiques.
- Double room, no lake view: around 20 m², on the mountain side of the villa facing the garden.
- Double room, side lake view: around 16 to 20 m², with a lateral view of the water.
- Superior room, front lake view: a similar size, with a small private terrace facing the lake.
- Executive room, front lake view: around 20 to 24 m², with a window straight onto the lake.
- Junior suites: around 30 to 36 m², in front lake view, terrace and “Venice” versions. The terrace junior suites are arguably the best value in the house.
- Vista Suite, Tower Suite and Heydweiller Suite: the top categories, around 50 to 60 m². The Vista and Tower suites are on the top floor with their own small wellness area (a Jacuzzi and massage bed) and a terrace; the Heydweiller Suite is on the ground floor in Liberty style.
Entry categories in a 1904 villa are compact. If space matters, go straight to a junior suite.
Dining
Food here is about setting rather than fireworks. The heart of it is the panoramic terrace, where breakfast is served as a buffet of local and international products and where dinner moves on summer evenings. A booking partner quotes D’Annunzio calling it the most beautiful terrace on Garda; you will see why.
- Ristorante Maximilian: the à la carte restaurant, named after the villa’s builder, with Italian cooking and local specialities. Tour operators list dinner from 8 pm to 10 pm, with a smart casual dress code (no shorts). Half board dinners are served here.
- Garden Bar: lighter dishes beside the pool, open during the day in the pool season (May to September, according to tour operators).
- American Bar: cocktails and an all-day lunch menu, open from morning until midnight, with piano music. One platform mentions live music on Thursday and Saturday evenings in June, July and August.
An honest note on Michelin: I found no Michelin star or other Michelin recognition for the hotel or its restaurant in the current guide, and the hotel does not publish its chef’s name. Guest reviews of the food are mixed. For a destination dinner, Il Fagiano at the nearby Grand Hotel Fasano holds a Michelin star; tell the hotel if you are on half board and plan to eat out.

Spa and pools

Do not book Villa del Sogno for a spa holiday: the published facilities list no thermal area, indoor pool or sauna. What you get is a small wellness service, with massages and beauty treatments by appointment and paid locally, plus a fitness room with a personal trainer on request. The Vista and Tower suites have their own Jacuzzi and massage bed, which is the closest thing to a private spa on site.
The pool is the real draw. It sits in the park among olive trees, with a large sun deck and a view down to the lake and across to Salò. Several tour operators describe it as purified with sea salt. It is an outdoor, seasonal pool, generally open from May to September, with loungers, parasols and towels provided and the Garden Bar alongside.
If wellness is a priority, see our Lefay Resort Lago di Garda review and Grand Hotel Fasano review.
Sport and activities

Villa del Sogno is one of only a handful of luxury hotels on the western shore with a tennis court in its own grounds, which is why it appears in our guide to tennis hotels on Lake Garda.
Tennis
There is one outdoor court in the park. Its surface is where our research turned up contradictory information: UK tour operators describe it as synthetic grass, while a German operator lists a hard court. It was not clear to us which applies, so confirm with the hotel if surface matters to you. Reports also differ on cost: one operator says equipment is complimentary from reception, another lists the court as available for a fee, and one mentions lessons with a professional instructor. Ask about booking, floodlights and coaching when you reserve.
Golf
There is no course on site, but this stretch of shore is a reasonable golf base. Golf Bogliaco in Toscolano Maderno, founded in 1912 and one of the oldest clubs in Italy, is a short drive north. Gardagolf in Soiano and the 27 holes at Palazzo Arzaga are within about half an hour to the south. The hotel does not publish partner green fees, so ask the hotel. For a course by course overview, see our guide to golf hotels on Lake Garda.
Everything else
The park itself is an activity: terraced lawns, olive and cypress groves and a path up the hill to a small temple. Beyond the gates: sailing, boat trips and hiking in the Alto Garda Bresciano park.
What’s nearby
- Il Vittoriale degli Italiani: D’Annunzio’s house, gardens and open-air theatre, a short trip from the hotel and the essential visit in Gardone.
- Salò: a long lakeside promenade, cafés and shopping, a few minutes south by car.
- Gargnano and the northern shore: a working harbour, lemon houses and some of the lake’s best restaurants. For boat trips, Sirmione and wine, see our Lake Garda guide.
Villa del Sogno vs other Lake Garda luxury hotels
| Hotel | Location | Standout | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Villa del Sogno | Gardone Riviera, hillside | 1904 villa, 35,000 m² park, panoramic terrace, salt pool, 1 tennis court | Romantic, classic villa stays |
| Grand Hotel Fasano | Gardone Riviera, lakefront | Historic lakefront hotel with a full spa, no tennis court | Couples who want the water and a spa |
| Eden Reserve Hotel | Gardone Riviera, hillside | Architect villas, many with private pools, tennis court listed by booking platforms | Design lovers and small groups |
| Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda | Gargnano, hillside | One of the lake’s largest spas, open most of the year | Serious wellness holidays |
In short: the Fasano gives you the lakefront and a proper spa, Eden Reserve gives you modern privacy, and Lefay is the wellness choice. Villa del Sogno wins on old-world charm, garden and terrace, at a smaller scale than any of them.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits:
- Couples and honeymooners who want a historic villa, a lake view terrace and a quiet park.
- Fans of small, family run hotels: the Calderan family has run it since 1986.
- Casual tennis players who want a court in the garden for a morning hit.
It does not suit:
- Spa lovers: treatments are available, but there is no spa area to spend an afternoon in.
- Anyone with limited mobility, given the slopes and steps of a hillside park.
- Those who want to step straight from their room into the lake.
- Serious tennis players looking for several courts, a resident pro and padel.
Charlotte’s tip: book the terrace, not just the room
At Villa del Sogno, the view is everything, so always pay for a front lake view, ideally a junior suite with terrace. Then plan at least one long dinner on the panoramic terrace at sunset and reserve a table when you check in. Come in June or early September, when the pool is open and the lake road quieter than in August.
Practical tips
- Booking: with so few rooms, book early for spring and September. Some operators set a minimum stay of two nights.
- Best rooms to request: a junior suite with terrace for the view, the Vista or Tower Suite for a special occasion. Avoid the no lake view doubles unless budget is tight.
- Season: the hotel closes in winter. One tour operator gives 28 March to 19 October as the opening period, and another sold 2025 stays from 12 April to 18 October. Confirm exact 2026 and 2027 dates with the hotel.
- Dress: relaxed by day, smart casual for dinner at the Maximilian. No shorts in the evening.
- Kids: our research turned up contradictory information on children. Some UK operators describe the hotel as adults only (16+) or say it does not accept children, while other platforms list baby cots and family services. It was not clear to us which applies, so confirm with the hotel before you book with children.
