Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda Review (2026): The Wellness Retreat Above Gargnano

Lake Garda with surrounding mountains

Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda is the place people mean when they say Lake Garda has a true wellness destination. It sits in a private park high above Gargnano on the quieter western shore, every room is a suite facing the lake, and the spa is the reason most guests come: around 4,300 m² of pools, saunas and treatment rooms built around the Lefay SPA Method, which blends Western medicine with classical Chinese medicine. My one-line verdict: arguably the strongest spa hotel on the lake, ideal for rest and reset, less so if you want to stroll to a harbour for dinner or play tennis every morning.

Location and getting there

Turquoise water of Lake Garda below the mountains

Lefay opened in 2008 as the first property of the Lefay group, founded by Domenico Alcide and Liliana Leali. It stands in about 11 hectares of parkland, olive groves and woodland on the slopes above Gargnano, on the stretch of shore known as the Riviera dei Limoni after its old lemon houses. It was built on bioarchitecture principles, with local stone and wood.

The elevation is both the charm and the compromise. You get wide views over the northern lake and real silence, but you are not on the waterfront. Gargnano’s small harbour is about a 10 minute drive down the hill, and the resort runs a shuttle into the village during the day, subject to availability.

Verona Villafranca is the most practical airport, roughly 90 minutes by car. Milan Bergamo is under two hours and Milan Linate a little over two. The hotel arranges paid transfers, and there is a helipad. Our Italy travel planner covers car hire and transfers if you want to explore the lake independently.

Rooms and suites

Every room is a suite, and published counts range from 93 (the Michelin listing) to 96 (several booking partners). All suites were renovated in 2021 in lighter tones with local natural materials, Italian-made fabrics, Bose Bluetooth speakers and large 4K screens. The main categories:

  • Prestige Junior Suite: around 50 m² with a sitting area, lake view and a marble bathroom with bath and shower. The core category.
  • Deluxe Junior Suite: also around 50 m², on the first floor looking over the gardens towards the lake. Two of them are adapted for guests with reduced mobility.
  • Family Suite: about 73 m², with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Children up to 11 are accommodated in these suites.
  • Exclusive Suite: about 83 m², with a separate living area and a whirlpool on the terrace or balcony facing the lake.
  • Sky Suite: three suites of 134 m², added in 2022, with a large panoramic terrace, outdoor whirlpool and a private sauna.
  • Royal Suite: the top suite in the main resort. Ask the hotel for current size and layout.

The newest addition is a collection of five Sky Pool Villas at the top of the hill, launched in spring 2026. They have two or three bedrooms, private gardens and heated infinity pools, and the three-bedroom Penthouse Sky Pool Villa adds more than 400 m² of indoor space, around 600 m² of terraces and its own spa area with whirlpool and bio sauna.

Dining

Lefay’s food follows its wellness philosophy without feeling like a diet. Herbs come from the resort’s own gardens, and both restaurants were refreshed in 2022.

  • La Limonaia: the main restaurant, on an upper floor with lake views, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mediterranean cooking in a contemporary style, with lighter dishes from the Lefay SPA recipe line marked on the menu.
  • Gramen: the gourmet restaurant, dinner only, and meat-free. At launch it offered two seven-course tasting menus, Per Agros (vegetables only) and Per Aquam (vegetables and fish), plus an à la carte selection. The menus were created by executive chef Matteo Maenza; ask the hotel who leads the kitchen today. Gramen is aimed at guests aged 10 and over.
  • Bars: a lounge bar open late, a pool bar by day and a cigar lounge for aperitifs.

An honest note: the hotel holds one MICHELIN Key, but I found no Michelin star for Gramen in the 2026 guide. If a starred dinner is part of your plan, Gargnano itself is remarkably well served: Villa Feltrinelli holds two stars and La Tortuga one, and further south Il Fagiano and Lido 84 in the Gardone and Fasano area both hold a star.

Spa and pools

Infinity pool looking over a lake and mountains

This is the heart of the resort. The Lefay SPA covered about 3,800 m² until 2022, when an adults-only area was added; recent figures put it at around 4,300 m². It is laid out around the four elements, and the treatment menu is built on the Lefay SPA Method, which combines Western scientific research with classical Chinese medicine and energy-based therapies. Multi-day programmes cover detox, stress, sleep and weight.

  • Outdoor infinity pool: the heated pool that seems to run straight into the lake, and the image most people know Lefay by.
  • Indoor and outdoor saltwater pools: connected, so you can swim out into the open air on cooler days.
  • Thalassotherapy pool: an indoor pool with hydromassage features.
  • Adults-only spa: added in 2022, with a panoramic hydromassage pool and a Finnish sauna overlooking the lake.
  • Saunas and heat: several types of sauna, a hammam, an ice pool and multiple relaxation rooms.
  • Gym: open 24 hours, with Technogym equipment, plus a studio for yoga, Pilates and tai chi classes.

Access rules for younger guests vary by source: one booking partner lists spa access from age 16, so families should ask the hotel which pools children can use. Treatments are paid.

Sport and activities

Golf course beside a lake with mountains behind

Lefay is a wellness resort first, and its sport offer reflects that. There is no tennis court on site, which is why it does not appear among the resorts in our guide to tennis hotels on Lake Garda.

Golf

Golf Bogliaco is the nearest course, just down the shore at Toscolano Maderno. Founded in 1912, it is one of the oldest clubs in Italy: an 18-hole, par 70 parkland layout above the water, open all year. Tour operators report reduced green fees and a transfer for Lefay guests; confirm the current terms with the hotel. The larger championship courses are in the south, so think of Lefay as a spa holiday with two or three rounds rather than a golf week. That is how we position it in our guide to golf hotels on Lake Garda, and our course overview of golf on Lake Garda helps if you want to add a southern course.

Walking, cycling and the lake

The park has walking trails and a running circuit, and e-bikes can be rented. The Alto Garda Bresciano park behind it has good hiking. For time on the water, ask the concierge to arrange a boat or use the public ferries from Gargnano.

What’s nearby

  • Gargnano: a working harbour, lakeside cafés and two of the lake’s starred restaurants, all a short drive down the hill.
  • Gardone Riviera: the Vittoriale degli Italiani, D’Annunzio’s extravagant estate, and botanical gardens, about 20 minutes south.
  • Sirmione and the southern shore: thermal baths, the Scaliger castle and boat trips. Our Lake Garda guide covers Sirmione, boat trips, wine and the best spas around the lake, and our Villa Cortine Palace review covers the classic hotel there.
  • Verona and Valpolicella: a full day out, better combined with a night elsewhere. See our Verona, Valpolicella and Lake Garda guide.

Lefay vs other Lake Garda luxury hotels

Hotel Location Standout Best for
Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda Gargnano, western shore Spa of around 4,300 m², infinity pool, all-suite, Golf Bogliaco nearby Serious wellness holidays
Quellenhof Luxury Resort Lazise Lazise, eastern shore Tennis and padel, adults-only Sky Pool, about 2,000 m² spa Active couples
QC Termegarda Calvagese della Riviera, south-west hills 27 holes at the door, large spa, historic villa Golfers who want to walk to the first tee
Grand Hotel Fasano Gardone Riviera, on the water Former Habsburg hunting lodge, AQVA Spa, starred Il Fagiano Classic lakefront grand hotel stays

In short: the Quellenhof is the better all-rounder for racquet sports (read our Quellenhof Lazise review), QC Termegarda is the golf choice (see our QC Termegarda review), and Lefay wins on pure wellness and quiet.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits:

  • Couples who want a spa holiday with lake views from every suite.
  • Guests who want a structured health programme, such as detox, sleep or stress, rather than just a massage.
  • Golfers travelling with a partner who would rather spend the day in the spa.

It does not suit:

  • Anyone who wants a lakefront hotel with a jetty and a harbour on the doorstep.
  • Tennis and padel players: there are no courts on site.
  • Travellers who want to walk to restaurants every evening without a car or taxi.
  • Diners looking for a Michelin-starred restaurant inside the hotel.

Charlotte’s tip: come in shoulder season and stay at least four nights

Lefay is not a weekend hotel: the spa programmes and slower rhythm need time, so book four nights or more. Late October, November and March are the best months here: the lake is quiet, the heated outdoor pools steam in the cool air, and you see the mountains far more clearly than in hazy August.

Practical tips

  • Booking: reserve spa treatments and any multi-day programme at the same time as the suite. Ask about current golf terms at Bogliaco when you book.
  • Best rooms to request: an Exclusive Suite for the terrace whirlpool, a Sky Suite for a special occasion, a Family Suite or Sky Pool Villa with children.
  • Season: the resort is open through Christmas and New Year but closes for a few weeks in January. Confirm exact dates with the hotel.
  • Dress: robes are the norm by day in the spa; smart casual in the evenings, a little smarter for Gramen.
  • Kids: children are welcome, with Family Suites and a kids’ club listed for ages 3 to 11, but Gramen and parts of the spa have age limits. Ask the hotel what applies on your dates.
  • Loyalty: Lefay formed a joint venture with Marriott in 2026, with Marriott Bonvoy integration expected by late 2026. Ask whether your stay earns points.

Almost. It opens for Christmas and New Year but closes for a few weeks each January; in 2025 the closure ran from 7 to 29 January. Ask the hotel for the current dates.

Does Lefay have a Michelin-starred restaurant?

Not as far as I could verify for 2026. The hotel holds one MICHELIN Key, and its gourmet restaurant Gramen serves meat-free tasting menus. Starred restaurants, including two-star Villa Feltrinelli, are a short drive away in Gargnano.

Yes. Golf Bogliaco, an 18-hole par 70 course founded in 1912, is just down the shore at Toscolano Maderno and is open all year. Reduced green fees for guests are reported; confirm with the hotel.

How far is Lefay from Verona airport?

Roughly 90 minutes by car. Milan Bergamo is under two hours. The hotel arranges paid transfers.
