If you remember this resort as the Chervò Golf Hotel Spa & Resort San Vigilio, you are not alone: booking sites still use the old name. Since the end of 2023 the owners have called it Garda Hotel San Vigilio Golf, a name chosen to tell foreign golfers exactly where they are. What has not changed is the substance: a four-star hotel wrapped around a medieval Benedictine abbey in the hills south of Lake Garda, with 36 holes of golf, a saltwater spa and tennis in the grounds. My one-line verdict: arguably the strongest pure golf base on Lake Garda, as long as you come for the fairways rather than for lake views or polished five-star service.

Location and getting there

The resort sits in the gentle glacial hills that rise behind the southern end of the lake, the same landscape that gives us Lugana wine and the battlefields of Solferino and San Martino, after which two of the golf loops are named. This is countryside, not lakefront: you see vines, fields and cypresses rather than water. Sirmione and Desenzano are roughly 15 to 20 minutes away by car.
Verona Villafranca is the natural airport, about 31 km away and roughly 35 to 40 minutes by car. Milan Bergamo is around an hour and a quarter, Milan Linate and Venice Marco Polo are closer to one and a half to two hours depending on traffic. The nearest railway station is Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione, about 20 minutes by car, on the high-speed line between Milan and Venice. The hotel offers airport transfers for a fee. You will want a car here. Our Italy travel planner covers car hire and transfers.
Rooms and suites
The hotel buildings grew out of the old abbey complex, which local sources date to the early 12th century, and the resort spreads across a large park of around 110 hectares, most of it golf course. On the room count, our research turned up contradictory information: Expedia, Golfbreaks and Voyage Privé list 89 rooms, while at least one booking platform states 80. It was not clear to us which figure is current, so ask the hotel if the size of the hotel matters to you.
What we could confirm about the categories:
- Comfort rooms: the entry category. Accessibility information is contradictory between booking platforms, so ask the hotel if you need a step-free room.
- Superior rooms: around 28 m², some with a patio onto the grounds.
- Deluxe rooms and Prestige or duplex rooms: the Prestige rooms are around 60 m² with a terrace, a sitting area and an open mezzanine, which makes them practical for three.
- Gran Suite: the top category. Sizes and layout are not published in detail, so ask the hotel.
- Apartments: a separate residence offers studios up to four-room apartments with marble floors, exposed beams and garden access. Useful for golf groups and families staying a week.
The style is warm and traditional, with wooden beams, some fireplaces and strong colours. Several recent guest reviews describe some rooms as dated, so ask which categories were refurbished most recently.
Dining
Dining is built around a golf day rather than a gastronomic pilgrimage. There are three outlets:
- Ristorante San Vigilio: the main restaurant in the Club House, with regional and Mediterranean cooking, lake fish and a list strong on Garda wines, including Lugana from the surrounding hills.
- Bistrot San Vigilio: by the pool, for lighter lunches between rounds.
- Bar and Pool Bar: drinks after golf and by the outdoor pools in summer.
The resort also produces its own wine and olive oil, sold in the renovated pro shop alongside local honey, pasta and preserves. The official site does not name a head chef, so ask the hotel if that matters to you.
On Michelin: I found no Michelin star or other distinction for the hotel’s restaurant in the 2026 guide. The good news is that starred cooking is close by: Sirmione and Desenzano both have Michelin-starred restaurants in the 2026 guide. Book one of them for a special evening and tell the hotel if you are on half board.

Spa and pools

The spa, known as San Vigilio Spa, is water-based rather than treatment-led. Most sources put it at around 1,000 m², although one golf tour operator quotes 1,500 m²; the difference may come down to what is counted, so treat 1,000 m² as the safer figure. The highlights:
- Heated indoor saltwater pool: the centrepiece, and a real asset on cool spring and autumn evenings after golf.
- Saltwater whirlpool, Finnish sauna and Turkish bath.
- Salt cave and experience showers, plus a solarium.
- Treatments: massages and body treatments for a fee. A private spa option is also mentioned, with a supplement.
Outside, booking platforms list two outdoor pools, which open for the warm season only. Opening dates are not published, so ask the hotel if you are travelling in April, May or October. The fitness room with Technogym equipment overlooks the pools and is free for guests, and the hotel offers yoga sessions by the pool on request. Ask the hotel about spa age limits if you travel with children.
Sport and activities

This is the reason to come, and why the resort features in our guides to golf hotels on Lake Garda and tennis hotels on Lake Garda.
Golf: 36 holes on site
The golf club opened in 2008 and the course was designed by the German architect Kurt Rossknecht. It is laid out as four nines:
- Benaco: par 36, about 3,400 metres.
- Solferino: par 36, about 3,370 metres.
- San Martino: par 35, about 2,900 metres.
- Pozzolengo executive course: par 27, about 1,000 metres, good for beginners, children and short-game practice.
Combine the three championship nines and you get three different 18-hole rounds without leaving the property, which is rare in Italy. The course hosted the Italian Open in 2020. Expect water hazards and strategic bunkering. Practice facilities include a driving range with covered bays, a putting green and a short-game area, and the Golf Academy offers lessons. The club is open every day of the year, with lower green fees in winter (from early November to early March, according to a golf booking portal). Whether green fees are included in your room rate depends on the package, so ask the hotel when you book.
The resort also sits in the heart of the southern golf cluster. Arzaga, now part of QC Termegarda, and Gardagolf at Soiano are both within easy reach, and our guide to golf on Lake Garda covers every course around the lake.
Tennis and other sports
The official website lists two tennis courts with a synthetic grass surface, with private lessons from instructors on request. One booking platform lists only a single court, so check the current number with the hotel if daily play matters. There is also a six-hole minigolf course for children. Booking platforms mention five-a-side football and beach volleyball, although the official sports page does not, so ask the hotel. Bikes can be hired for rides through the Lugana vineyards.
What’s nearby
- Sirmione: the castle, the Grotte di Catullo and the thermal spas. Our Lake Garda guide covers Sirmione, boat trips and the best spas.
- Solferino and San Martino della Battaglia: the 1859 battlefields and their towers, a few minutes away.
- Lugana wine: cellars all around Pozzolengo and Peschiera for tastings of the local white.
- Verona: around 40 minutes by car for the Arena and summer opera.
- Gardaland: Italy’s best-known theme park, about 20 minutes away, useful with children.
Garda Hotel San Vigilio Golf vs other Lake Garda hotels
| Hotel | Location | Standout | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garda Hotel San Vigilio Golf | Pozzolengo, southern hills | 36 holes on site, saltwater spa pool, tennis | Golf-first weeks with maximum variety |
| QC Termegarda | Calvagese della Riviera, south-west hills | 27 holes and a large thermal-style spa | Golfers with a spa-loving partner |
| Villa Cortine Palace Hotel | Sirmione peninsula | Historic villa, park, clay court, private pier | Couples who want the lake itself |
| Quellenhof Luxury Resort Lazise | Lazise, eastern shore | Tennis and padel, 2,000 m² spa, lake views | Racquet players and spa lovers |
In short: San Vigilio gives you more holes than anywhere else on the lake. If you want 27 holes plus a bigger spa, read our QC Termegarda review. For a romantic lakefront stay a short drive from these courses, our Villa Cortine Palace review is the place to start, and if tennis and padel come first, see our Quellenhof Lazise review.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits:
- Golfers who want to play several different rounds without driving to another club.
- Golf and tennis households, where one partner plays 18 and the other takes a lesson.
- Families who value space, apartments, minigolf and a short drive to Gardaland.
- Travellers who want a four-star price rather than lakefront five-star rates.
It does not suit:
- Anyone who wants to wake up to a lake view: the water is not visible from the grounds as far as we could establish.
- Travellers expecting five-star polish, as some rooms are described as dated in guest reviews.
- Food lovers who want a destination restaurant in-house.
- Visitors without a car who want to stroll to dinner in town.
Charlotte’s tip: play three loops, then go to the lake for dinner
Stay four nights and play a different 18-hole combination each morning: Benaco and Solferino, then Solferino and San Martino, then San Martino and Benaco. Leave the afternoons for the saltwater pool, and book one dinner at a starred table in Sirmione to watch the sunset over the water. March and late October are lovely here, with cheaper green fees around the start and end of the season, as long as you do not need the outdoor pools.
Practical tips
- Booking: reserve tee times, lessons and spa treatments when you book the room, and check for tournament dates, which can fill the course. Green fees can also be booked online through the club.
- Best rooms to request: Prestige rooms with terrace for space, Superior rooms with patio for direct access to the grounds, apartments for families or golf groups. Ask which rooms were refurbished most recently.
- Season: the hotel and golf club stay open all year, but the outdoor pools are seasonal. Spring and autumn are prime golf months.
- Dress: standard golf etiquette on the course, smart casual at dinner.
- Kids: booking platforms describe the hotel as family-friendly, with cots and paid babysitting. Ask about spa age rules.
- Pets: pets are accepted for a daily fee according to booking platforms. Confirm the current charge with the hotel.
- Search both names: many sites still use the old Chervò name.
