Villa La Massa solves the oldest dilemma of a Florence trip: do you sleep in the city, close to the Uffizi but surrounded by crowds, or in the countryside, with a pool and cypresses but a long drive in? This historic estate in Candeli sits on a bend of the Arno just outside the city, with a large riverside park, a spa in the old cellars and a free electric shuttle to the Ponte Vecchio. It holds two MICHELIN Keys in the 2026 selection and belongs to the same group as Villa d’Este on Lake Como. My one-line verdict: arguably the most practical country villa for a first Florence stay, as long as you accept a seasonal hotel and a restaurant that aims for Tuscan comfort rather than Michelin stars.

With a season of roughly April to mid-November and strong demand for weddings and events, spring and autumn weekends fill early. Compare dates before you commit.
Location and getting there

Candeli is a small riverside village in the municipality of Bagno a Ripoli, upstream from Florence where the Arno leaves the city and turns towards the Valdarno. The villa stands directly on the water, with olive groves and the hills of Bagno a Ripoli behind it. It feels rural, yet the centre is under 15 minutes away by car outside rush hour.
That proximity is the hotel’s real selling point. A complimentary shuttle, now an electric minibus, runs between the villa and the Ponte Vecchio several times a day; you need to reserve a seat at reception. You can see the Uffizi in the morning, swim after lunch and return to town for dinner without driving.
Florence Peretola airport is about 16 km away, roughly 30 minutes by car depending on the ring road traffic. Pisa and Bologna airports are both well over an hour away, and Santa Maria Novella station is a short taxi ride. A car is only needed for golf, wine tours or day trips; our Italy travel planner covers car hire.
Rooms and suites
Accommodation is spread across a cluster of historic buildings rather than a single block. The main house, Villa Nobile, is joined by the Mulino (the old mill on the river), the Villino, the Limonaia and the Casa Colonica, a restored Tuscan farmhouse; The Leading Hotels of the World also lists a sixth building, Villa Hombert. The estate itself has origins reaching back to the 13th century.
Our research turned up contradictory information on the room count: the MICHELIN Guide and booking platforms list 51 rooms and suites, while The Leading Hotels of the World (24 rooms and 30 suites) and a December 2025 feature in an Italian magazine give 54. It was not clear to us which applies in 2026, so if the exact size matters to you, confirm with the hotel.
- Style: classic Florentine rather than contemporary: antique furniture, rich fabrics, marble bathrooms and painted ceilings in the main villa. The hotel describes its rooms as recently renovated, with a strong Tuscan character.
- River views: the rooms facing the Arno are the ones to request.
- Casa Colonica: the farmhouse holds four suites and a kitchen and can be booked on an exclusive basis, which makes it a good choice for families or friends travelling together.
Dining
Executive chef Stefano Ballarino oversees all the kitchens. For the 2026 season the hotel announced a shift in its main restaurant towards Tuscan tradition: homemade pasta, ingredients from small producers in the surrounding hills and classics such as bistecca alla fiorentina and chicken cacciatora, with a contemporary tasting menu by the chef alongside.
- Il Verrocchio: the main restaurant, with a large terrace above the Arno that the hotel calls the biggest on the river. Breakfast, dinner and a Sunday brunch (not in August) are served here.
- L’Oliveto Bistrot: a casual spot in a converted stone hayloft by the pool, serving lighter Mediterranean dishes at lunchtime.
- Bar Mediceo: the intimate bar inside the villa, with a new list of nine signature cocktails built around the three parts of Dante’s Divine Comedy.
- Wine cellar: a vaulted 15th-century cellar used for tastings and paired dinners. Published figures for the list range from more than 400 to around 1,000 labels, so treat it simply as a deep Tuscan, Italian and French list.
An honest note on Michelin: the two Keys are for the hotel as a place to stay. I could not find a Michelin star for Il Verrocchio in the 2026 guide. For a starred dinner, take the shuttle into Florence one evening; the city has plenty of options, and the hotel concierge can book them.
Spa and pools

The Arno Spa is one of the more atmospheric small spas around Florence. It occupies 325 m² of the villa’s original cellars, under brick cross and barrel vaults with antique terracotta floors.
- Wet area: sauna, a stone steam room, experience showers, an ice fountain and a heated whirlpool bath.
- Treatments: two beauty suites that also work for couples. Products come from Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, the historic Florentine pharmacy, and the estate’s own olive oil is used in some facials and scrubs.
- Gym: Technogym equipment, free weights and space for yoga.
- Hours and age policy: open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 according to the 2026 spa brochure. The spa and gym are for guests aged 18 and over; 16 and 17 year olds may enter with an adult.
- Outdoor pool: a heated pool in the park, surrounded by lemon trees, olives and cypresses, with L’Oliveto alongside. Booking platforms also list a children’s pool. The pool is seasonal, so ask the hotel for the opening dates if you travel in April or late October.
Spa access for hotel guests is listed as included by the MICHELIN Guide; treatments are paid. With only two treatment rooms, book ahead.
Sport and activities

Villa La Massa is not a sports resort, but it is a better sporting base than most Florence hotels, which is why it appears in our guides to golf hotels in Tuscany and tennis hotels in Tuscany.
Golf at Ugolino
The nearest course is Circolo Golf Ugolino, which the hotel puts 8 km away, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive south into the Chianti hills. It is a historic, tree-lined 18 holes, par 72. The hotel lists it as open year-round but closed on Mondays unless a public holiday falls on that day. Guests get preferred green fees; the exact rate is not published, so ask the hotel when you book. For more variety, the hotel also points to Le Pavoniere (about 45 minutes) and Poggio dei Medici in the Mugello (about 50 minutes). Our guide to golf in Tuscany compares them.
Tennis next door
There is no court inside the grounds. Instead, the hotel works with Match Ball Firenze Country Club, a five-minute walk away, which has 16 courts set among meadows and olive groves. Private lessons for adults and children can be arranged. Some booking sites call court use free for guests, but the hotel asks you to contact guest relations for prices, so check. Courts need booking at least 24 hours ahead.
Everything else
The hotel offers bicycles, cooking classes with the chef, hiking in the Bagno a Ripoli hills and, for children, activities such as falconry and a kids’ club. In mid-October the villa hosts Villa La Massa Excellence, a supercar concours that in 2026 ran from 16 to 18 October.

Villa La Massa vs other luxury stays around Florence
| Hotel | Location | Standout | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa La Massa | Candeli, on the Arno, about 8 km from the centre | Riverside park, cellar spa, free shuttle, two MICHELIN Keys | Florence sightseeing with a country retreat |
| Villa Cora | Florence, hillside above the Oltrarno | Neoclassical villa in its own park, two MICHELIN Keys | Walking into town without a shuttle |
| COMO Castello del Nero | Chianti, between Florence and Siena | Castle estate, COMO Shambhala spa, tennis | Wine country first, Florence second |
| Il Borro | Valdarno, about 60 km from Florence | Medieval village estate, two MICHELIN Keys | A self-contained countryside stay |
In short: Villa Cora is the choice if you want to walk everywhere, Castello del Nero and Il Borro if the countryside is the main event, and Villa La Massa if you want both in one stay. For more city options, see our pick of the best luxury hotels in Florence.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits:
- First-time Florence visitors who want the sights by day and a garden and pool in the evening.
- Couples after classic Tuscan romance on the river.
- Golfers who want a round at Ugolino with the Uffizi in the afternoon.
- Families who like space, a children’s pool and the option of a whole farmhouse.
It does not suit:
- Winter travellers: the hotel closes from around mid-November to early April.
- Food lovers who want a starred restaurant on site.
- Fans of contemporary design.
- Those who want to stroll back from dinner in the centre at midnight without arranging a taxi.
Charlotte’s tip: go in May for the irises
The villa has its own iris garden, and May is when it flowers, when the pool season is getting going and before the summer heat settles on Florence. Take the first shuttle into town, see the Uffizi early, and be back for lunch by the pool. Ask for an Arno-facing room: watching the river at dusk from your window is the moment that makes this hotel.
Practical tips
- Booking: reserve shuttle seats, spa treatments, cooking classes, tennis and Ugolino tee times when you book the room, especially on spring and autumn weekends.
- Best rooms to request: anything facing the Arno; the Casa Colonica for a family or group.
- Season: open from 2 April in 2026; the hotel closed on 16 November in 2025. Confirm 2026 closing and 2027 opening dates with the hotel.
- Events: weddings and the October supercar weekend can fill the grounds; ask what is on.
- Kids: welcome, with a kids’ club and family activities, but not in the spa or gym under 16.
- Driving: parking at the hotel is free, with EV charging. Do not drive into central Florence: the restricted traffic zone brings heavy fines. Use the shuttle.
