Tennis Hotels on Lake Maggiore: The Best Luxury Hotels with Tennis Courts (2026)

Lake Maggiore does tennis the old-fashioned way. There are no big resort academies here, no rows of floodlit clay courts. Instead you get a single court tucked into the park of a Belle Époque hotel, a morning hit before the first boat to Isola Bella, and a long lunch afterwards. This guide covers the hotels on the Piedmont shore and Lake Orta with a court in their own grounds, the local clubs, and the best months to play.

  • Best boutique luxury: Villa e Palazzo Aminta, Stresa, a private court, a lakeside pool and two restaurants.
  • Best grand hotel: Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees, Stresa, for the spa and park pools, with a court that the hotel itself does not promote.
  • Best in Pallanza: Grand Hotel Majestic, Verbania, a lakefront classic with a court, a small beach and an indoor pool.
  • Best value with a court: Hotel Splendid and Hotel Simplon in Baveno, and Hotel L’Approdo on Lake Orta.

If you are still choosing a region, our hub on the best luxury hotels with tennis courts in Italy compares the lakes with the coast, the islands and the Dolomites.

Stresa is the easiest base on the lake, with the train from Milan, the island boats and most of the hotels below within a few kilometres. Rooms facing the islands go first, so compare rates early for June and September.

Every hotel below has a court in its own grounds, confirmed by the hotel or by at least two independent sources. No hotel here publishes its court surface and only one confirms floodlights, so ask the hotel if either matters to you.

Hotel Regina Palace (Stresa)

Regina Palace is the grand palace hotel on the Stresa lakefront, with a park facing the islands. For tennis it is the most practical choice on the lake: the hotel describes a court in the park, next to the outdoor pool, that is lit for evening play and doubles as a five-a-side pitch. Booking is required, an instructor is available on request and the concierge lends equipment.

There is a heated outdoor pool, and the Regina Sporting Club has a gym, sauna, steam room and, according to the local tourist board and guest reviews, an indoor grotto pool. The Charleston and The Liberty restaurants both have summer terraces. Tour operators list a season of March to October; confirm 2026 dates with the hotel.

Best for: players who want to hit every day, including after dinner.

Charlotte’s tip: one court means you plan around the weddings

Every hotel on this list has a single court, and Stresa is wedding country from May to September. Ask at check in which afternoons have events in the park, then book your court for the early morning on those days. A 7:30 hit, breakfast on the terrace and the 9:30 boat to Isola Bella is the ideal Stresa routine.

Villa e Palazzo Aminta (Stresa)

Just north of Stresa on the road to Baveno, Villa Aminta is a small five-star with gardens running to the water. Tour operators and luxury booking partners list a private tennis court on site; surface and lighting are not published, so ask the hotel.

The large outdoor pool looks across to the islands, and the spa is built around the Camelia grotto with a steam bath and ice waterfall. Le Isole is the main restaurant and I Mori the more intimate one. There are private moorings, and a minibus runs into Stresa. Tour operators list the hotel as open from late March to early November.

Best for: couples who want five-star service, a quiet court and a pool with a view of the Borromean Islands.

Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees (Stresa)

The grande dame of the lake, opened in 1863 opposite Isola Bella. Tour operators and travel reviewers mention one tennis court in the grounds, but the hotel does not promote it. We could not confirm surface, lighting or whether it is in regular use, so ask the hotel. Our full Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees review covers the rooms and dining in detail.

The reason to stay is everything else. The Des Iles SPA covers around 3,000 square metres with indoor and outdoor pools, sauna and hammam, and the park pools usually open from mid-May to mid-September. Il Borromeo serves Piedmontese and Mediterranean cooking, and the Hemingway Bar does a proper dry Martini. The hotel has closed in winter in recent years.

Best for: spa lovers and classic grand hotel fans for whom tennis is a bonus, not the point.

Grand Hotel Majestic (Verbania)

The Majestic sits on the water in Pallanza, the prettiest part of Verbania, with its own landing stage, a small private beach and the gardens of Villa Taranto nearby. Tour operators and recent guest reviews confirm a tennis court in the garden; surface and lighting are not published. One partner site says court use is included in the rate, another mentions a supplement, so ask the hotel.

The pool is indoors and heated, with a sauna and gym alongside; there is no outdoor pool. La Beola is the restaurant, known for lake fish. On the season, our research turned up contradictory information: a UK tour operator lists the hotel as open from 1 April to 14 October, while an Italian booking partner shows it open all year in 2026. It was not clear to us which applies, so confirm with the hotel before you book outside the summer months.

Best for: a quieter base than Stresa, with lake swimming from the hotel beach.

Hotel Splendid (Baveno)

A four-star superior hotel on the Baveno lakefront, with its own small beach and jetty. The tennis court is in the hotel grounds and charged as an extra; surface and lighting: ask the hotel.

The large garden pool has a whirlpool area and a children’s pool, and the compact spa has a steam bath and salt sauna. The restaurant terrace faces the islands. Opening months are not published, so ask the hotel.

Best for: families and couples who want a beach, a pool and a court in one place at a sensible price.

Hotel Simplon (Baveno)

A historic four-star in Baveno set in a large park of palms and lawns, owned by the same group as the Grand Hotel Dino next door. It has a tennis court and a five-a-side pitch in the grounds; surface and lighting: ask the hotel.

There is a large outdoor pool with a whirlpool and a children’s pool. On the indoor pool, sources differ: one listing places an indoor pool at the Simplon itself, while a hotel review says guests use the indoor pool and wellness area at the sister Grand Hotel Dino. It was not clear to us which applies, so confirm with the hotel.

Best for: families who want space, a park and a court, and an easy walk into Baveno.

Hotel L’Approdo (Pettenasco, Lake Orta)

Lake Orta’s smartest address, Villa Crespi, has no tennis. The practical option is Hotel L’Approdo, a four-star on the water in Pettenasco, a short drive north of Orta San Giulio. The local lakes tourist board and booking partners list an outdoor tennis court on site; surface and lighting: ask the hotel.

There is a large outdoor pool, a private beach, a landing stage and a small wellness room with sauna and whirlpool, booked in two-hour slots. Season dates: ask the hotel.

Best for: a calm few days on Lake Orta with a court, a pool and a boat to Isola San Giulio.

Where else to play tennis around Lake Maggiore

Tennis net on an outdoor court

With one court per hotel, a local club is useful for a hitting partner or a covered court on a wet day. Ask your concierge to call ahead.

  • Stresa: the town’s tourist office lists a court at Brisino, in the hills just above Stresa, and the La Cascina sports centre in Carciano. Court numbers and surfaces are not published, so book through your hotel.
  • Verbania: the municipal tennis centre at Trobaso, a short drive inland from Pallanza, has four red clay courts, two of which are covered by a dome in winter.
  • Lesa: Sporting Lesa, south of Stresa towards Arona, has tennis and padel along with a gym and a summer pool. Ask the club about visitor bookings.
  • Cannero Riviera: a clay court a short walk from the waterfront can be booked by the hour.

If you are combining lakes, our guides to tennis hotels on Lake Como and tennis hotels on Lake Garda cover resorts with more courts and proper coaching programmes, and the best tennis courts on Lake Como lists the clubs there.

When to play tennis on Lake Maggiore

Aerial view of Lake Maggiore

On the lakes the calendar is set by hotel openings and rain rather than heat.

  • April and May: quiet courts and fresh air, but expect showers. Some outdoor pools open only in mid-May.
  • June: my favourite month. Long evenings, warm water and comfortable midday temperatures.
  • July and August: warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Play early in the morning, or on a lit court such as Regina Palace’s in the evening.
  • September and early October: excellent for tennis, with settled weather and fewer day trippers on the islands.
  • November to February: most hotels here close. The covered clay courts at Trobaso are your best bet.

Charlotte’s tip: come by train and pack light

Stresa, Baveno and Verbania are all on the Simplon line from Milan, and every hotel in Stresa is a short taxi from the station, so you do not need a car. Bring your own racquet and clay shoes. Our Italy travel planner covers Malpensa transfers and trains.

Hotels we looked at but did not include

Villa Crespi on Lake Orta has a three-Michelin-star restaurant but no court in any listing we found. Grand Hotel Dino in Baveno lists courts only nearby. We found no evidence of an on-site court at Grand Hotel Bristol in Stresa, Il Sole di Ranco on the Lombard shore, or Lido Palace in Baveno, where listings place tennis among nearby facilities. Hotel Cannero’s court is nearby, not in its grounds. For golf on the same shore, our hub on the best golf resorts in Italy explains why Stresa makes a good base.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hotel on Lake Maggiore is best for tennis?

Hotel Regina Palace in Stresa. It is the only hotel we found that confirms floodlights and an instructor on request.

Do any Lake Maggiore hotels have more than one court?

Not that we could confirm. If you want several courts and a tennis academy, look at Sicily, Sardinia or South Tyrol instead.

Are the hotels open in winter?

Mostly not. Villa e Palazzo Aminta is listed as open from late March to early November, Regina Palace from March to October, and the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees has closed in winter in recent years. Sources disagree on the Majestic, so ask the hotel.

What court surface should I expect?

No hotel in this guide publishes its surface, so ask the hotel. Local clubs such as the municipal centre in Verbania play on red clay, so clay shoes are a safe choice.
