Let me be honest: the Amalfi Coast is one of the hardest places in Italy to find a hotel tennis court. The coast is a near vertical wall of limestone, and a flat patch big enough for a court is worth more as a lemon grove or a pool terrace. That scarcity is the point of this guide. Across the Sorrento peninsula, the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Ischia, I could verify only six hotels with a court of their own. Book one and you will play somewhere very few people ever do.

Hotels with courts are few, and most only open from spring to autumn. Peak weeks in June and September fill early, so compare dates now.
Why tennis courts are so rare here

Several famous names do not have a court on site. The Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento lists tennis courts roughly 800 metres away, not in its own gardens. Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi points guests to tennis about ten minutes away by car. Capri Tiberio Palace offers access to a nearby court and coaching, but no court of its own. For Borgo Santandrea, Villa Cimbrone and Parco dei Principi I could not find any reliable confirmation of an on site court, so they are left out. The gentler terraces of Sorrento and Ischia have room for courts; the Amalfi Coast proper has exactly one hotel court I could verify.
The hotels with their own tennis courts
1. Il San Pietro di Positano (Positano, Amalfi Coast)
This is the court people travel for. Il San Pietro is carved into the headland just east of Positano, and its single court sits at sea level between a rough rock face and a pebble beach, reached by lift and a final run of stone steps. Use is complimentary and exclusive to hotel guests. Rackets and balls are available on request, a private trainer can be arranged, and you reserve your slot through the concierge. Surface and lighting: ask the hotel.

Off court there is a pool terrace facing Praiano, a private beach club, a spa and Zass, the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant. From May to mid October the hotel runs a complimentary two hour boat cruise each morning with a swim stop. The hotel is generally open from April to October.
Best for: once in a lifetime matches and couples who want tennis, beach and boat without leaving the property.

2. Grand Hotel Quisisana (Capri Town, Capri)
Founded as a sanatorium in 1845 and a hotel since 1861, the Quisisana sits on Via Camerelle, a few minutes from the Piazzetta. Unusually for Capri it has two tennis courts, both with a synthetic grass surface. Lessons, individual or in a group, are offered by Peppino Ercolano, an instructor affiliated with the Italian Tennis Federation. Lighting and racquet hire: ask the hotel.

With around 140 to 150 rooms and suites, outdoor and indoor pools, the QuisiBeauty spa with gym and Turkish bath, and the Colombaia restaurant by the pool, this is a full resort in the island’s busiest quarter. It is seasonal, so confirm spring and autumn dates.
Best for: players who want coaching, then Capri’s evening scene on foot.

3. Grand Hotel Cocumella (Sant’Agnello, Sorrento peninsula)
The Cocumella stands on the clifftop in Sant’Agnello, about a 20 minute walk from Piazza Tasso in Sorrento. It is a historic hotel in gardens that include a vegetable plot, with its own tennis court in the grounds. Surface and lighting: ask the hotel.

A lift (or a long flight of steps) takes you down to a private beach and jetty, handy for boat pick ups. There is an outdoor pool with a poolside restaurant serving wood fired pizza, a spa with sauna and hot tub, and a small gym. The hotel closes in winter; sources give either November to March or a season of mid-April to late October, so confirm your dates.
Best for: Sorrento logistics with a garden, a court and sea access in one place.

4. Hilton Sorrento Palace (Sorrento)
The most practical rather than the most romantic option. The Hilton sits in large grounds within walking distance of the centre and has one tennis court plus two floodlit padel courts, bookable for an extra charge with rackets and balls from the front desk. Ideal if half your group has caught the padel bug.

There are six tiered outdoor pools open from April to October, an indoor heated pool for the cooler months, a gym and a kids’ club from mid June to mid September. It is a four star rather than a palazzo, but strong value for a sporty family week.
Best for: families and groups who want tennis, padel and pools with central Sorrento on foot.

5. Mezzatorre Hotel & Thermal Spa (Forio, Ischia)
Mezzatorre occupies a former watchtower and cottages in a seven hectare park near Lacco Ameno. Its sea view tennis court is set in greenery above the Gulf of Naples, and there is a gym, personal training and yoga and Pilates classes three times a week. Surface and lighting: ask the hotel.

After a match: a thermal spa fed by the hotel’s own spring, three hydrotherapy pools, a saltwater pool at the beach club, and a private bay with paddle boards and snorkelling gear. There are 48 rooms and suites and two restaurants, including the gastronomic La Torre. For 2026 the hotel is open from 2 April to 26 October.
Best for: quiet tennis and thermal recovery, far from day trip crowds.

6. Regina Isabella (Lacco Ameno, Ischia)
Ischia’s classic grand hotel sits on the bay in Lacco Ameno, around 15 minutes by car from Ischia Porto. It lists two tennis courts among its facilities; for surface, lighting and coaching, ask the hotel.

There are four pools including a heated saltwater pool, a thermal bath and medical spa, a gym, a small private beach and two jetties with loungers, and three restaurants under a Michelin starred executive chef. The hotel runs island tours on its own motorboat. It is seasonal, so check exact dates.
Best for: doubles in the morning, spa in the afternoon, serious dining at night.

Ischia often has better availability than Capri and Positano in high summer, and its hotels open early in April. Compare both before you decide.

Charlotte’s tip: book the court when you book the room
With one court per hotel, the cool morning slots go first. Email the concierge as soon as your booking is confirmed and ask for a standing 8am slot plus a trainer or hitting partner. Pack an all court sole and a spare overgrip: sea air makes everything sticky by July.
Where else to play if your hotel has no court

- Positano: Tennis al Settimo Piano on Viale Pasitea, a short walk from Piazza dei Mulini, has artificial turf courts set in a rocky canyon above the sea, with showers and racquet hire. Book ahead.
- Sorrento: local clubs rarely publish visitor rates in English, so ask your concierge to book.
- Capri: Capri Tiberio Palace lists a nearby court and coaching for guests. Elsewhere, ask your hotel to call ahead.
- Vico Equense: Hotel & Resort Le Axidie at Marina d’Equa has three outdoor courts. It is upper midrange rather than luxury, but useful for volume of play.
Best season for tennis on the Amalfi Coast
Almost every hotel here is seasonal, so your window is April to October.
- April and early May: quiet and fresh, cold sea, excellent tennis.
- Late May and June: my favourite. Long days, warm water, no August crowds.
- July and August: play before 9am or after 6pm; peak rates and traffic.
- September and October: warmest sea, easier bookings. Watch late October closing dates.
How to combine tennis with boat days

The rhythm that works: tennis early, boat by late morning, lunch on the water, a swim before dinner. Summer roads are slow, so a boat is often faster anyway.
- From Positano: join Il San Pietro’s daily cruise or charter a gozzo to Amalfi. Our guide to seeing the Amalfi Coast by boat compares the best routes and tours.
- From Capri: play at the Quisisana, then circle the island. See our Capri by boat guide for the Blue Grotto and the Faraglioni.
- From Sorrento: the Cocumella’s jetty makes pick ups easy, and Capri is a short crossing.
- From Ischia: the Regina Isabella’s own motorboat handles island tours, and Procida makes a lovely half day.
On rest days, Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius are an easy train ride from Sorrento, and our Naples food guide plans a day of pizza and sfogliatelle.
Charlotte’s tip: split the stay
Do not commute to courts. Spend three nights at Il San Pietro or the Quisisana for the trophy court, then three or four on Ischia, where courts are calmer and thermal pools fix tired legs.
