The Hilton Sorrento Palace is not a palazzo, a cliff-edge boutique hotel or a family heirloom. It is a big, well-run hillside hotel in a citrus and olive garden above the town, with six cascading outdoor pools, a tennis court, two floodlit padel courts, a rooftop bar scene and views over the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius. My one-line verdict: buy it for the facilities and the walk into town, not for romance or a spa.

Location and getting there

The hotel stands in its own grounds on rising ground behind the centre of Sorrento, in what the hotel calls its Mediterranean Park: a garden of olive trees said to be more than 300 years old, plus lemon and orange trees that also supply the kitchen. The height buys the view; it also means you are not on the water. Piazza Tasso, the cathedral and Corso Italia are roughly 8 to 12 minutes away on foot, downhill, and the station for the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii and Naples is a similar walk. The port at Marina Piccola, for ferries to Capri, Naples and the Amalfi Coast, takes 15 to 20 minutes on foot or a short taxi ride. Coming back, expect a climb.
Naples Capodichino is the natural airport, about 45 to 50 km away. Allow an hour or more, longer on summer weekends. Salerno Costa d’Amalfi airport is an alternative at around an hour and a half by car. On-site parking is available for a daily fee; Hotels.com lists it at about 21 euros, but confirm with the hotel, as fees change. The hotel does not advertise its own airport shuttle, so book a private transfer in advance; our Italy travel planner covers transfers and car hire.
Rooms and suites
This is a large hotel by peninsula standards, and that shapes everything. Our research turned up contradictory room counts: venue platforms such as Cvent and Meeting e Congressi list 325 rooms (including 4 suites and 8 junior suites), a conference agency lists 328, and some older review sites quote more than 340. It was not clear to us which figure is current, so ask the hotel if it matters. The building dates from 1981, and several sources report refurbishment work between 2024 and 2026; which floors and categories have been redone is not published, so request a renovated room when you book.
The main categories you will see on booking platforms:
- Double Superior: the entry category, sold with rear view, garden view or sea view. Rear view is the one to avoid if you are paying for Sorrento.
- Double Deluxe Sea View: more space and a balcony facing the bay.
- Double Executive Sea View: sea view plus access to the Executive Lounge, which adds breakfast and an evening drinks hour.
- Junior suites and suites: a small number, with a separate living area and bay panoramas. Some suites are reported to have their own hydromassage pool; ask the hotel for specifics.
Most rooms have a balcony or terrace, and many can be interconnected, which is useful for families. The style is bright and Mediterranean rather than grand. Reviewers note that not every room has been modernised, and only about half face the sea.
A note on the lounge, because sources disagree. Older reviews describe an Executive Lounge on the seventh floor with its own small rooftop pool. A June 2026 blog review describes the current lounge, called La Pompei, on the second floor, open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 with an evening happy hour, and does not mention a pool. If a lounge pool is a reason you are booking Executive, confirm it with the hotel first.
Dining
The Hilton has more places to eat and drink than most hotels in Sorrento, but many of them only open in the warm months. Opening months below come from Hilton and tour operator listings, which do not always match.
- Sorrento il Ristorante: the main restaurant, serving traditional Italian and Campanian dishes with garden ingredients and bay views, for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is a buffet.
- J Contemporary Japanese: sushi, tempura and gyoza on a rooftop terrace on the seventh floor, roughly May to October.
- L’Agrumeto Barbecue and More: grilled fish, meat and artisan pizza in the citrus garden, summer evenings only.
- Il Pagoda Pool Bar: drinks, salads and light bites by the pools, in summer.
- La Terrazza Lounge Bar: sunset cocktails, with DJ sets or live music on summer evenings.
- Happyssimo: a rooftop lounge and restaurant with a sea-view terrace, opened in 2023, open Tuesday to Sunday in season.
- Sorrento Lounge: coffee by day and cocktails late, the main year-round bar.
An honest note on Michelin: none of the hotel’s restaurants appears among the starred addresses of the 2026 Michelin Guide, and I could not find a named head chef for any of them. For a starred dinner, Sorrento and neighbouring Sant’Agnello have several options; check the current Michelin Guide before you book.

Spa and pools

Pools are the hotel’s strongest card. The centrepiece is a set of six interconnected outdoor pools stepping down the garden on different levels, with sun decks between them. They are open from April to October. For the rest of the year there is a heated indoor pool styled like a Roman bath, with frescoes and natural rock, which operates from November to March. A rooftop infinity pool is also listed at Happyssimo; ask the hotel about access.
Two caveats from guest reports. First, in July and August, when the hotel is full, loungers around the main pools go early. Second, the switch-over months can be awkward: an April 2026 guest found the outdoor pools still closed, and a July 2026 guest reported the indoor pool temporarily out of service.
What the Hilton does not have is a proper spa. There is a fitness room with cardio and strength equipment and a solarium, and some booking platforms mention massages, but no thermal suite or spa circuit is published. If wellness is central to your trip, look elsewhere.
Sport and activities

Sport is the main reason this hotel features in our guide to tennis hotels on the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento, where we rate it the best pick for a mixed group.
Padel
Two padel courts with floodlights, so you can play after sunset when the heat drops. Hilton states hours of 7:00 to midnight, with last reservations at 22:30. Use of the court is charged, the fee covers four rackets and three balls, and you must book in advance at the front desk. Coaching is not advertised, so ask the hotel if you want a lesson.
Tennis
One outdoor tennis court, also bookable for a fee, with rackets and balls available from the front desk. The surface and lighting arrangements are not published, and no resident tennis pro is advertised, so ask the hotel. If structured lessons matter, the Grand Hotel Quisisana on Capri, with two courts and a Federation-affiliated instructor, is the better choice in the region.
Families and everything else
A kids’ club runs from mid June to mid September, and there are playgrounds and table tennis in the grounds. The port makes Capri an easy day trip, and our guide to Capri by boat explains how to see the Blue Grotto and the Faraglioni without the crowded ferries.
What’s nearby
- Sorrento old town: Piazza Tasso, the cathedral, Corso Italia and the lanes of limoncello shops are a short walk downhill.
- Capri: fast ferries from Marina Piccola reach the island in around 20 to 25 minutes in season.
- Pompeii and Herculaneum: both reachable by Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento station. Book entry in advance with our guide to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius tickets.
Hilton Sorrento Palace vs other hotels with courts in the region
| Hotel | Location | Standout | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hilton Sorrento Palace | Sorrento, above the centre | 1 tennis court, 2 floodlit padel courts, six tiered pools plus indoor pool | Families, groups, padel players |
| Grand Hotel Cocumella | Sant’Agnello | Historic garden hotel with its own court and a lift down to the sea | Couples who want character near Sorrento |
| Grand Hotel Quisisana | Capri Town | 2 courts with an instructor, indoor and outdoor pools | Lessons and Capri evenings |
| Il San Pietro di Positano | Just east of Positano | Court at sea level, Michelin-starred Zass | Seclusion, views and gastronomy |
In short: the Hilton wins on padel, pools and value, while the Grand Hotel Cocumella nearby in Sant’Agnello is arguably the better choice if you want history, a romantic garden and sea access, and accept that it closes in winter.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits:
- Families who want several pools, a summer kids’ club and interconnecting rooms.
- Groups of friends who want padel after dark and a rooftop bar without leaving the hotel.
- Travellers who want central Sorrento, the port and the train on foot.
It does not suit:
- Couples looking for an intimate, historic hotel: this is a large, modern building that also hosts conferences of up to 1,500 people.
- Spa lovers, since there is no real spa.
- Food lovers who want a Michelin-starred restaurant in-house.
- Anyone who dislikes uphill walks, or wants to step straight into the sea.
Charlotte’s tip: pay for the sea, then book the court at dusk
A rear-view room here feels like a different, much plainer hotel, so always pay for a sea-view or Executive room on a high floor. Then book the padel court for around 20:00, when the heat has gone, and walk down into town for a late dinner. Late May, June and September give you open pools and bars without the August crowds.
Practical tips
- Booking: reserve padel and tennis slots, restaurant tables at J and Happyssimo, and airport transfers as soon as the room is confirmed.
- Best rooms to request: Deluxe or Executive Sea View on an upper floor, recently renovated if possible; interconnecting rooms for families.
- Season: June to September gives you every pool, bar and the kids’ club. In April, October and November, check which pools and outlets are operating.
- Conferences: the hotel hosts large events, especially outside peak summer. Ask whether a big group is in house on your dates.
- Kids: one child can stay free in the parents’ room using existing bedding, according to Hotels.com; confirm the current policy with the hotel.
- Do not confuse it with Majestic Palace: Hilton has signed the Majestic Palace in Sant’Agnello to join its Curio Collection after a full renovation, with opening planned for spring 2027. It is a separate hotel.
