Opatija and the Kvarner Riviera: Habsburg Villas and the Lungomare (2026)

Seaside promenade lined with belle époque villas on the Adriatic coast

Opatija was the Adriatic’s first grand resort, a place where Habsburg society came to winter by the sea, and the town still looks the part: pastel villas, camellias, a concert pavilion and a 12 kilometre promenade that runs along the rocks from the fishing harbour of Volosko to Lovran. Behind it rises Učka, the mountain that shelters the coast; across the bay lie Krk, Cres and Lošinj. This guide covers the history worth seeing, the best tables, the day trips and where to stay, with what we could verify for 2026.

Quick answer: Opatija and the Kvarner Riviera

  • How many days: three days for Opatija, Volosko and Učka; add one or two for Cres or Lošinj.
  • Best base: Opatija itself, on or just above the Lungomare, so you can walk to Volosko for dinner.
  • Best months: May, June and September; October for chestnuts and new wine, with cooler swims.
  • Top three experiences: the Lungomare walk from Volosko to Lovran, dinner on Volosko’s harbour, and the view from Vojak on Učka.
  • What to book ahead: seafront hotels for July and August, dinner at Plavi Podrum and Nebo, and any private boat to the islands.

Opatija’s seafront hotels sit right on the Lungomare, between Volosko’s restaurants and the beaches towards Lovran.

Getting there: airports, ferries and drive times

Opatija is closer to Italy than most travellers assume, and many visitors simply drive in from Trieste. Croatia has been part of the Schengen area since 2023, so there are no routine passport checks on the land borders with Slovenia. Drive times below are rough guides; summer weekends add a lot.

  • Rijeka Airport: on the island of Krk near Omišalj, across the Krk bridge. Allow roughly 45 minutes to Opatija. Flights are largely seasonal, so check schedules for your dates.
  • Trieste Airport: at Ronchi dei Legionari, north of Trieste. Allow around an hour and a half to Opatija via Slovenia; from Trieste city it is about an hour.
  • Pula and Ljubljana: useful alternatives, each roughly one and a half to two hours by car depending on traffic.
  • From Italy by sea: there is no direct passenger line from Italy to Opatija. Seasonal fast catamarans link Venice with Istria (Umag, Poreč, Rovinj and Pula), and a summer hydrofoil runs from Trieste to Poreč and Rovinj; from there Opatija is a drive of around one and a half hours through the Učka tunnel. Our guide to Rovinj and Istria makes a natural first stop.
  • Island connections: the car ferry from Brestova (south of Opatija) crosses to Porozina on Cres, and Jadrolinija’s catamaran line 9308 links Rijeka with Cres and Mali Lošinj. Krk is reached by bridge.
  • Parking: central Opatija is tight and seafront spaces are paid. Choose a hotel with its own parking and walk or take a taxi along the coast.

The essential sights

Historic villa in a subtropical park with palms on the Adriatic coast

Villa Angiolina and its park

Opatija’s story starts here. In 1844 Iginio Scarpa, a merchant from Rijeka, built Villa Angiolina as a summer residence and named it after his late wife. Guests such as Empress Maria Anna praised the climate, and in 1889 Opatija was officially declared a climatic health resort. Today the villa houses the Croatian Museum of Tourism, founded in 2007. The tourist board lists it as open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Mondays; we could not confirm 2026 hours or ticket prices, so check before you go.

Angiolina Park around it has more than 120 plant species, according to the tourist board, and a camellia field that is the park’s best known corner. Nearby is the Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion, which hosts exhibitions and concerts.

The Lungomare to Volosko and Lovran

Officially the Franz Joseph I Promenade, the Lungomare runs 12 kilometres along the shore from Volosko in the north, through Opatija, Ičići and Ika, to Lovran. It was built in two stages: Volosko to Opatija was finished in 1889, Opatija to Lovran in 1911. Along the way you pass the statue of the Girl with the Seagull, Slatina beach, the little port of Dražica and a run of belle époque villas and former sanatoriums. Walk north to Volosko for dinner (a short stroll from the centre) and south to Lovran on a separate morning; taxis bring you back.

Volosko

Volosko is the fishing village at the northern end of the promenade: steep lanes, galleries and a tiny harbour, the mandrać, lined with restaurant terraces. It is also the birthplace of the scientist Andrija Mohorovičić. Come in the evening, when the day visitors have gone.

Lovran

Lovran’s small medieval old town, around St George’s Square, sits at the southern end of the Lungomare. The town is known for its maruni, a sweet chestnut larger and lighter in colour than the common kind, and for its cherries.

Učka Nature Park

The park covers 160 square kilometres of the mountain behind the riviera. Vojak, the highest peak at 1,401 metres, has a stone lookout tower with a park information point; on clear days the view takes in Istria, the Kvarner islands, the Gorski Kotar mountains and, according to the park, Venice and the Alps. Poklon Pass (922 metres) is the informal hub, with information, e-bike rental and trails. Entry is free. Watch for griffon vultures, golden eagles and the endemic Učka bellflower.

Rijeka and Kastav

Rijeka, a short drive from Opatija, is a working port city and European Capital of Culture 2020. Climb to Trsat Castle and the pilgrimage church above the city for the view over the gulf, and if you visit in late winter, check the dates of the Rijeka Carnival. Kastav is a walled hilltop town above the riviera, known for Belica, a young white blend of the local verdić, mejski and divjak varieties, sometimes with a little Malvasia. Its Bela Nedeja festival celebrates the new wine on the first weekend of October.

The best experiences for a luxury traveller

  • Food: Kvarner scampi and fish on Volosko’s harbour, then a tasting menu at Nebo in Rijeka, the riviera’s only Michelin starred table in the 2026 guide. In autumn, look for maruni in everything from sauces to ice cream.
  • Wine: Belica in Kastav, Žlahtina from Vrbnik on Krk, and Malvazija and Teran from neighbouring Istria. Our Croatia wine guide and Istria wine guide cover the estates worth a detour.
  • Boat: a skippered day to the cliffs of Cres, the sea cave on Plavnik or the coves of southern Krk. Our guide to Kvarner by boat covers routes, rules and the bura.
  • Beaches: mostly rock and concrete platforms with ladders into deep, clear water. Slatina is the main town beach; the larger hotels have their own lidos, and the pebble bay at Medveja beyond Lovran is a longer swim stop.
  • Wellness: the riviera was built on health: the climatic resort status of 1889 drew convalescents for decades. Today that tradition lives on in hotel spas and seawater pools. Lošinj, declared a climatic health resort in 1892, continues it across the bay.
  • Day trips: Krk town and Vrbnik by bridge; Cres town and Beli by the Brestova ferry; Mali Lošinj by catamaran from Rijeka, best as an overnight. Plitvice is a long day by car; our Plitvice Lakes guide explains how to time it.

A three day itinerary

Day one: Opatija and Volosko. Morning at Villa Angiolina and the park, coffee in the centre, a swim at your hotel’s lido. In the late afternoon, walk the Lungomare north to Volosko and stay for dinner on the harbour.

Day two: Učka, Lovran and Kastav. Drive up to Poklon early and walk or drive on to Vojak for the clearest views. Come down to Lovran for lunch and a wander through the old town, then walk part of the Lungomare back towards Opatija. Finish with dinner in Kastav or at Nebo in Rijeka.

Day three: the islands. A skippered boat to Cres and Plavnik, or the Brestova ferry to Cres town and a drive to Beli. With a fourth day, take the catamaran to Mali Lošinj and stay the night.

Charlotte’s tip: walk the Lungomare in two halves

Do the northern half to Volosko at sunset and the southern half to Lovran on a separate morning, when the sea is calm and the light is behind you. Wear proper shoes rather than sandals, since some stretches are uneven stone, and leave the car at the hotel: a taxi back costs less than the stress of parking.

Restaurants

Seafood dinner on a harbour terrace by the sea at dusk

Michelin status below follows the Michelin Guide Croatia 2026, announced in June 2026. Book ahead from June to September.

  • Nebo, Rijeka: one Michelin star in 2026. Modern cuisine at the Hilton Rijeka Costabella, on the coast between Rijeka and Opatija.
  • Plavi Podrum, Volosko: new to the Michelin selection in 2026. A long established fish restaurant on the mandrać, built on fresh catch, prawns and a serious wine list.
  • Villa Ariston, Opatija: listed in the Michelin Guide for seasonal cuisine, in a historic villa by the sea.
  • Stancija Kovačići, Opatija area: new to the Michelin selection in 2026, with Croatian cooking. It sits in the hills above the coast, so plan on a taxi.
  • Konoba Pescaria, Mošćenička Draga: a Bib Gourmand for fish and seafood, a short drive south of Lovran.

Draga di Lovrana, above Lovran, was the first restaurant in Kvarner to win a Michelin star, but it does not appear in the current Michelin Guide selection; check its status directly.

Best months, crowds and events in 2026

Opatija is a year round town, which sets it apart from much of the coast. May, June and September give warm days and space on the promenade; July and August are busy and the hotel lidos fill early. Winter is quiet and mild, good for walking and spa time.

Cruise ships: we found no published 2026 cruise schedule for Opatija. Rijeka’s port receives some calls, so check the port’s schedule if a day in the city matters to you.

Events verified for 2026:

  • Cherry Days, Lovran: 13 June 2026 in the old town, with tastings and a guided walk; the same day Lovran hosted a natural wine festival.
  • Bela Nedeja, Kastav: traditionally the first weekend of October. We could not confirm the 2026 dates on an official source, so check with Kastav’s tourist board.
  • Marunada, Lovran: the chestnut festival runs from mid October to the end of the month in Lovran and nearby villages. 2026 dates were not published on the sources we checked.
