Istria by Boat: Rovinj, the Brijuni Islands and the Coast from Venice (2026)

Rovinj and the Church of St Euphemia

Istria is the part of Croatia closest to Italy, and from the water it still feels half Venetian: bilingual harbour towns and a scatter of low green islands off Rovinj. South of them lies a national park you can sail into and moor at, the Brijuni Islands, and at the tip of the peninsula the wild coves of Kamenjak. Distances are short and the sea is often calm in the morning.

Quick answer: Istria by boat

  • Best departure harbour: Rovinj for the islands and the west coast; Pula or Fažana for Brijuni; Medulin bay for Kamenjak.
  • Best half day route: Rovinj harbour to Red Island and the Golden Cape shoreline, with a swim stop between the islets.
  • Best full day route: Pula to the Brijuni Islands, mooring at Veliki Brijun port, then south to Kamenjak for a late swim.
  • Best months: June and September; late May and early October if you accept some weather risk.
  • Book ahead: the boat for any July or August date, your Brijuni visit if you want a guided tour, and a hotel near your harbour.

This guide is part of our Croatia yacht charter series, the first country beyond our Italy by boat guides.

Arriving from Italy: fast ferries from Venice and Trieste

Combining Istria with the Veneto needs no flight. Seasonal fast catamarans link Venice with Umag, Poreč, Rovinj and Pula, and Trieste with Poreč and Rovinj. Rovinj’s tourist board lists the Venice service from May to the end of September 2026, with fewer sailings in October, and gives around three hours. From Trieste, 2026 listings show roughly two to three hours. Timetables change with the weather, so check before you plan around them.

As the crow flies, Umag is roughly 46 nautical miles from the Lido entrance to the Venetian lagoon, Rovinj about 55 and Pula nearer 70. From Trieste, Umag is only around 16 nautical miles away. For the lagoon, read Venice by Boat, and for the open sea passage see our guide to Italy to Croatia by boat.

Harbours and marinas: where boats leave from

Rovinj harbour at sunset
  • Rovinj: the obvious base. ACI marina Rovinj, on the south-eastern side of the town harbour below the old town, lists 195 berths and takes yachts up to 50 metres for daily stays; day boats also leave from the town quays. Pula Airport is about 40 km by road, Trieste Airport about 147 km.
  • Poreč and Vrsar: for the Lim channel area; Poreč is around nine nautical miles north of Rovinj.
  • Novigrad and Umag: the northern harbours, closest to Trieste and Slovenia. ACI marina Umag is open all year.
  • Pula: ACI marina Pula, open all year inside the city harbour, is the most practical base for Brijuni by private boat.
  • Fažana: the small town opposite the Brijuni Islands. The national park’s own boats leave from a jetty in the centre and take about 15 minutes to Veliki Brijun.
  • Medulin and Pomer: ACI marina Pomer, in the bay of Medulin, is the shortest run to Kamenjak and the Medulin archipelago.

Five routes in detail

Distances are straight-line estimates; times assume a motor boat in calm water. A sailing yacht needs longer.

1. Rovinj islands and the Golden Cape (half day)

Pass Sveta Katarina, the island opposite the old town, and run about two nautical miles south west to Red Island (Crveni otok), two islets, Sveti Andrija and Maškin, joined by a causeway, with rocky shelves to swim from. Return along the Golden Cape (Zlatni rt), the forest park south of town, where pines meet pale rock and clear water. Allow 15 to 20 minutes each way. Lunch ashore in Rovinj; if you want to eat on Red Island, ask the skipper what is open that day.

2. Lim channel and the west coast to Vrsar (half day)

The Lim channel opens about three nautical miles north of Rovinj: a flooded karst valley with steep wooded sides, shellfish farms and Romuald’s Cave high on the northern slope. Read the rules below first, because private boat access is unclear. If your boat cannot go in, continue to Vrsar and swim among the islets offshore. Allow three to four hours.

3. Pula to the Brijuni Islands (full day)

From ACI marina Pula, Veliki Brijun port is around four nautical miles away once out of the harbour. Moor, check in and explore on foot, by bicycle or on the park’s own programme: the safari park, the Byzantine castrum, Verige Bay and the dinosaur footprints. Swim only at marked bathing areas; lunch at one of the park’s restaurants. If the sea allows, continue south to Kamenjak for a late swim.

4. Kamenjak and the Medulin archipelago (half or full day)

From ACI marina Pomer it is around three nautical miles to Kamenjak, the protected southern tip of low cliffs, pebble coves and islets. Istria’s official tourism site describes the sea cave at Mala Kolombarica, below the Safari bar: tall and open with a small beach, plus a hidden cave reachable only in calm sea. It warns that the water in the notch is only about two metres deep, against jumping from the rocks and against entering in any swell. Add the Medulin islets for a full day and lunch in Premantura or Medulin.

5. The north: Umag to Poreč (full day or longer)

Novigrad is about seven nautical miles south of Umag, Poreč around six beyond, with the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica in its old town. Over several days, continue south and round Kamenjak into the Kvarner Gulf; our Kvarner by Boat guide covers Lošinj, Cres and Rab.

Rules: national park, protected areas, speed and anchoring

Based on the Brijuni National Park site, Istria’s official tourism site and the Croatian government’s nautical pages, checked in 2026. Rules change: confirm with your skipper, the park or the harbour master.

Brijuni National Park

  • Entry: the park allows passage through its waters only for boats arriving to moor in Veliki Brijun port, or to anchor in the designated zone in front of the port. Boats up to 55 metres can enter the port; larger yachts use a buoy or anchor in the Fažana Channel.
  • No stops: the park’s code of conduct says vessels may not stop between the islands of Jerolim and Veliki Brijun.
  • Fees: the park publishes a price list by boat length and season, with surcharges for catamarans and for passengers above the included number. The 2024 list included boat and passenger entry tickets. The nautics page links a 2026 list and says the Pula Port Authority collects boaters’ entry fees from 1 May.
  • Arrival: call the port on VHF channel 9. Boaters register at the national park reception on arrival.
  • On the islands: swim only at marked bathing areas; fishing, collecting marine life and discharging waste are prohibited.
  • Season: the park is open all year. The park’s published boat schedule shows daily departures from Fažana in every month, cut to two a day from November to March, so check the current timetable before you go.
  • Without your own boat: park boats leave from Fažana; buy tickets in advance.

Lim channel

Istria’s official tourism site lists the Lim channel as a special marine reserve since 1980, and the county’s navigation leaflet prohibits high speed planing there. On private boats, our research turned up contradictory information: one cruising resource says navigation is prohibited because of the shellfish farms, another says yachts have no access, while organised excursion boats run into the channel in summer. It was not clear to us which rule applies to a private skippered boat, so confirm with your skipper or the Rovinj harbour master. Do not count on anchoring or swimming inside.

Kamenjak

Donji Kamenjak and the Medulin archipelago are a protected landscape managed by a public institution in Premantura. Because of strong currents, diving is limited to dives accompanied by licensed local divers. We found no published anchoring rules for private boats, so check with the skipper or the institution.

Speed, distance and anchoring

  • Speed near the coast: Croatia’s maritime safety regulation (NN 52/2025, amended in April 2026) sets a maximum of 8 knots within 300 metres of the coast, while Istria’s navigation leaflet gives 5 knots within 150 metres and 8 knots between 150 and 300 metres. Harbour masters can set stricter local limits, so follow the lower figure and ask your skipper. Motor boats may plane only more than 300 metres off the coast, where planing is not otherwise prohibited.
  • Beaches: keep at least 50 metres from a marked bathing area and 150 metres from a natural beach.
  • Anchoring: forbidden where Croatian charts mark it as prohibited. Concession anchorages and buoys are charged. Foreign-flag boats must obtain the e-Vignette before anchoring.

Types of boat and what a skippered charter includes

Boat in a sea cave

Open motor boats and speedboats suit the short hops between Rovinj’s islands. For Brijuni or a full day, a cabin motor yacht with shade and a toilet is more comfortable. Sailing yachts suit several days.

A skippered charter typically includes the boat, the skipper and often snorkelling gear and water. Typically extra, so agree it in writing:

  • Fuel.
  • Lunch ashore and any food on board.
  • Mooring at Veliki Brijun port and the park’s fees.
  • Concession buoys and marina berths on multi-day trips.
  • Tourist tax and navigation fees on longer charters: confirm who pays.

For a bareboat charter, the person in charge must hold a boating licence that Croatia recognises; the Ministry of the Sea publishes a list of accepted foreign certificates. Where the boat has a VHF radio, an appropriate radio operator certificate is also required.

Best months, winds and practical tips

June and September bring warm water and fewer boats than August. July and August are the most settled but busiest; May and October are cooler and less predictable.

Three winds matter. The maestral, the north westerly summer sea breeze, usually builds in the afternoon, so start early. The bura blows from the north east in sudden strong gusts and can cancel a trip. The jugo, from the south east, brings swell that makes Kamenjak’s exposed tip and cave entrances unsafe.

  • What to bring: sun cream, a hat, a light layer, water shoes for rock, cash and passports for the Brijuni check-in.
  • Seasickness: choose a morning departure and a larger boat for longer runs.
  • Booking timing: reserve July and August boats well ahead.
  • August crowds: swim early, lunch late.

Charlotte’s tip: stay in Rovinj, sail Brijuni from Pula

Rovinj is the better place to stay, but the run to Brijuni is shorter from Pula or Fažana. Drive the 40 km and board in Pula, keep Rovinj’s islands for a relaxed half day, and ask for the Brijuni mooring and fees to be confirmed in writing before paying a deposit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit the Brijuni Islands on a private boat?

Yes, by mooring in Veliki Brijun port or anchoring in the zone in front of it and paying the park’s fees. Without a boat, take the park ferry from Fažana.

Can a private boat enter the Lim channel?

Sources disagree, so confirm with your skipper or the Rovinj harbour master.

How long is the ferry from Venice to Rovinj?

Around three hours on the seasonal fast catamaran, according to Rovinj’s tourist board.

Do I need a licence to hire a boat in Istria?

Not with a skipper. For bareboat hire you need a boating licence Croatia recognises, plus a radio certificate if the boat has a VHF radio.
