Between the east coast of Lefkada and the Greek mainland lies the Inland Sea: a sheltered basin of small islands, wooded bays and fishing harbours where distances are short and the swell rarely reaches. Meganisi, Scorpios, Madouri, Kalamos and Kastos sit within an hour of Nidri by fast boat, while on the far side of Lefkada the white cliffs of Porto Katsiki and Egremni face the open Ionian. It is one of the gentlest places in Greece for a first skippered day on the water, and an easy add on after a crossing from Puglia.

Quick answer: Lefkada, Meganisi and Scorpios by boat
- Best departure harbour: Nidri for the inland sea; Vasiliki for the west coast beaches; Lefkas Marina for yachts.
- Best half day route: Nidri to Madouri, around Scorpios, then Meganisi for Abelike bay and the Papanikolis cave.
- Best full day route: Nidri to Kalamos and Kastos, lunch on Kastos, a Meganisi swim on the way back.
- Best months: June and September.
- What to book ahead: a skippered boat for July and August, lunch tables on Meganisi or Kastos, and a marina berth if you arrive by yacht.
This guide is part of our Greece by Boat series; the Greece yacht charter hub links every island group, and Corfu, Paxos and Antipaxos by boat covers the waters further north.

The east coast between Lefkada Town and Nidri is the most practical base for the inland sea. Seafront rooms for July and August go early.
Harbours and marinas: where boats leave from

Lefkada is joined to the mainland by a causeway and a floating bridge, so you can drive straight on. Aktion airport near Preveza is the closest; allow roughly half an hour to Lefkada Town, longer if the bridge is open for boats.
- Lefkas Marina, Lefkada Town: room for around 620 yachts up to 45 metres according to the operator, with a fuel station. Best for yacht charters; allow around 40 minutes by fast boat to Nidri.
- Nidri: the main day boat harbour, about 20 minutes by car south of Lefkada Town, with Scorpios, Madouri and Meganisi directly opposite. Lively rather than elegant.
- Vlycho and Perigiali: sheltered bays just south of Nidri, used by yachts and smaller hire boats.
- Sivota (Lefkada): an almost enclosed inlet on the south coast, roughly 45 minutes by car from town, a calm start for Kalamos and Kastos. Not to be confused with Syvota on the mainland.
- Vasiliki: the south west windsurfing harbour, about an hour by car from town and the shortest run to Porto Katsiki; local boats quote around 50 minutes.
The Lefkas canal and the floating bridge in 2026
Boats between Lefkas Marina and the north must pass the floating bridge at Agia Mavra, which opens on a timetable. Our research turned up contradictory information here. After a closure in autumn 2024, the marina reported openings every two hours from 08:00 to 20:00. In July 2025 the bridge was closed to vessels when its inspection certificate expired, a replacement ferry took over in August, and opening times changed several times that summer. We found no official 2026 timetable, so ask Lefkas Marina or the Lefkada port police before planning a canal passage. Day boats from Nidri, Sivota and Vasiliki never need the bridge.
Five routes in detail
Times are estimates for a fast motor boat in calm water; sailing yachts and wooden caiques are slower.
1. Half day: Madouri, Scorpios and Meganisi from Nidri
Pass Madouri, the small private island just off Nidri, then circle the wooded shore of Scorpios, bought by Aristotle Onassis in the 1960s. Cross to Meganisi, about 15 minutes away, to swim in Abelike bay, a deep inlet with several arms, then run down the west coast to the Papanikolis cave, named after the Greek submarine said to have sheltered there in the Second World War. Small boats can usually nose inside in calm water. Four hours is comfortable.
2. Full day: around Meganisi
Start at the Papanikolis cave while the water is still, then follow the south and east coasts, where pale shingle coves face Kalamos and the mainland. Lunch in Vathi, the main harbour at the head of a long bay, or moor at Porto Spilia and walk up to Spartochori, a whitewashed hilltop village. Spend the afternoon in one of Abelike’s arms. Six to seven hours, most of it at anchor.
3. Full day: Kalamos and Kastos
The quietest islands here. From Nidri or Sivota, allow around 40 minutes to Kalamos, a mountainous, pine covered island with a harbour village. Swim on its west side, then continue to Kastos, long and low, with a small harbour, a few tavernas and little traffic. Lunch on the quay and return along Meganisi’s south coast. Seven to eight hours.
4. Full day: the west coast from Vasiliki
Leave early, before the wind builds. Round Cape Lefkatas with its lighthouse to Porto Katsiki, a cove beneath white limestone cliffs, then continue to Egremni, a long beach beneath an even higher cliff. Both are best seen from the water; read the rockfall notes below, as your skipper may prefer you swim from the boat rather than land. Five to six hours.
5. Two to three days: the inland sea by yacht
From Lefkas Marina, sail down the east coast to Vlycho bay or Vathi on Meganisi for the first night. Cross to Kalamos and Kastos on day two, then return via Sivota for a final sheltered night. Legs of an hour or two leave most of each day for swimming. With more time, continue south to Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos.
Rules: protected areas, Scorpios, anchoring and closures in 2026

Rules in Greek waters are set nationally and by each local port authority, and they change from season to season.
- Natura 2000: the waters of almost the whole inland sea form the site “Inner Ionian Archipelago (Meganisi, Arkoudi, Atokos, Vromonas)”, code GR2220003, which also takes in Skorpios, Madouri, Sparti, Kalamos and Kastos: a mostly marine area of around 88,000 hectares within the remit of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA). It protects Posidonia seagrass meadows, the Mediterranean monk seal and bottlenose dolphins. Anchor on sand, never on seagrass, and keep well away from any seal. We found no site specific anchoring bans published for 2026; ask your skipper.
- Scorpios: privately owned and being developed as an exclusive resort. Landing beyond the beach is not permitted. Boats do anchor off the island, but boaters report security staff approaching vessels that come close, and we found no official published distance, so follow your skipper. Madouri is also private.
- Porto Katsiki and Egremni: both lie beneath unstable cliffs. Local sources report that the Municipality of Lefkada closed land access to Egremni in 2025 and that February 2026 storms caused further rockfall on its stairs. At Porto Katsiki, landslide zones are fenced. Never sit or anchor beneath the cliff face, and check the current status with the port police or your skipper on the day.
- Swimming zones and speed: buoyed swimming zones are closed to motor boats, and local port authorities set the distances boats must keep from beaches each summer. Approach any beach at minimum speed and watch for swimmers and paddle boards.
- Archaeology: removing anything from the seabed that could be an antiquity is a criminal offence in Greece. Dive only with a licensed local dive centre.
- Fees: Lefkas Marina charges berthing fees, and harbours such as Vathi, Kalamos and Kastos may charge port dues. Yachts in Greek waters are also subject to the Greek cruising tax (TEPAI); on a charter, ask whether it is included.
Types of boat and what a skippered charter includes
- RIBs and speedboats: fast, ideal for half days and the sea cave; little shade.
- Day cruisers with a cabin: shade, a toilet, a sun pad; best for families on longer days.
- Wooden caiques: slower, covered deck, well suited to the sheltered inland sea.
- Sailing yachts and catamarans: the classic choice for two days or more.
- Crewed motor yachts: longer itineraries with a cook, mostly based at Lefkas Marina.
Usually included in a private skippered day: skipper, boat, water and soft drinks, often snorkelling masks. Often extra: fuel on motor boats, lunch ashore, harbour mooring fees and a gratuity. On multi day charters, fuel, provisions, berths and port dues are normally paid by guests. Get the inclusions in writing before paying a deposit.
Bareboat: to skipper a yacht yourself you need a recognised licence; the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is widely accepted, and a second crew member with sailing experience is usually required. We could not confirm the current rules on an official Hellenic Coast Guard page, so check with the charter base and the port police before booking.

Best months, winds and practical tips
June and September bring warm water and far fewer boats. July and August are hottest and busiest, with Meganisi’s anchorages full by midday. May and October work on calm days, though small island tavernas keep shorter hours.
The maistro: the Ionian’s summer north westerly typically builds from late morning or early afternoon and fades towards sunset. In the inland sea it makes for pleasant sailing; off the west coast and Vasiliki it raises a chop. Plan open water stretches for the morning. The meltemi, the strong northerly of the Aegean, matters in the Cyclades rather than here.
- What to bring: reef safe sunscreen, a hat, water shoes, a light layer and cash for harbour tavernas.
- Seasickness: rare in the inland sea, likelier on the west coast. Sit at the stern and take medication before leaving if you are prone to it.
- Booking: for July and August, book a private boat several months ahead.
- August crowds: around 15 August Greek holidays peak; leave early and favour Kalamos and Kastos.
Charlotte’s tip: split the island by wind, not by distance
Take the west coast trip from Vasiliki with an early start and be back before the afternoon breeze, and keep the inland sea for afternoons, when the same wind makes for an unhurried sail between Nidri and Meganisi. With only one day, choose Meganisi and the Papanikolis cave over Porto Katsiki: calmer water, better swimming and no rockfall.
Where to stay near the departure harbours

Lefkada has few internationally branded luxury hotels. The best bases for boat days are at Nikiana, between Lefkada Town and Nidri, plus a quiet inland retreat and a simple base in Vasiliki.
Porto Galini Seaside Resort & Spa, Nikiana
A seafront resort around 12 kilometres from Lefkada Town and 4 kilometres from Nidri, with its own secluded beach, a pool with a children’s area, a restaurant and a bar. Our research turned up contradictory information on its star rating: some booking listings show five stars, a regional guide says four. Ask the hotel about spa facilities and opening months.
Best for: families and couples who want a beach close to Nidri.
Check rates at Porto Galini Seaside Resort & Spa
Ionian Blue Bungalows and Spa Resort, Nikiana
A larger resort of around 116 rooms on the same stretch of coast facing the inland sea, a short drive from Nidri and Lefkada Town and roughly 20 kilometres from Aktion airport. Listings mention a beach, indoor and outdoor pools and a spa. Ask the hotel about season dates.
Best for: spa days between boat days.

Pavezzo Country Retreat, Katouna
Stone apartments, maisonettes, a cottage and a villa in the hill village of Katouna, about 8 kilometres from Lefkada Town and 2 kilometres from the sea, some with private pools. There is an outdoor pool, a restaurant and a wellness area with hammam and sauna. Lefkas Marina is a short drive. Ask the hotel about opening months.
Best for: couples who prefer olive groves to a beach resort.
Check rates at Pavezzo Country Retreat
Hotel Grand Nefeli, Vasiliki
A small aparthotel of about 20 rooms near Vasiliki beach, around 1.5 kilometres from the harbour, with a pool, a beachfront restaurant and rooms with kitchenettes. More relaxed than luxurious, but the practical base for an early start to Porto Katsiki. Ask the hotel about season dates.
Best for: windsurfers and the west coast day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you land on Scorpios?
No. It is a private island being developed as a resort. Boats can pass and swim nearby; follow your skipper and any instructions from security staff.
Is Porto Katsiki open in 2026?
Porto Katsiki and Egremni are both affected by rockfall, and local sources report land access to Egremni officially closed since 2025. Check with the Lefkada port police or your skipper, and keep away from the cliff base.
Which harbour is best for the inland sea?
Nidri, with Scorpios, Madouri and Meganisi directly opposite. Sivota is a calmer alternative on the south coast.
Do I need a licence to charter a boat on Lefkada?
Not with a skipper. To skipper a yacht yourself you need a recognised licence such as the ICC, usually with an experienced second crew member; confirm with the charter base.
