Villa Cordevigo Wine Relais is a Venetian country villa at the end of a cypress avenue in the Bardolino hills, a few kilometres inland from Lake Garda. It belongs to the families behind Vigneti Villabella, so the vines you see from the terrace are the ones that end up in your glass at dinner, and dinner can mean Oseleta, the estate’s Michelin-starred restaurant. My one-line verdict: one of the most rewarding wine stays on the Veronese side of the lake, as long as you want quiet countryside and a villa atmosphere rather than a lakefront resort with a long list of facilities.

Location and getting there

Cavaion Veronese sits on the morainic hills that rise behind the eastern shore of Lake Garda, in the heart of the Bardolino Classico zone. The villa is reached by a private drive lined with cypresses, and the house is surrounded by a large park with an Italian garden, old trees and vineyards. You do not see the lake from every corner, but you feel it: the climate is mild, the light is soft and the shore is close.
Distances are short in every direction. Bardolino and the lakefront are roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car, Verona’s historic centre is about half an hour away depending on traffic, and Verona Villafranca airport is around 22 km, typically 25 to 30 minutes. The hotel can arrange private transfers for a fee.
You will want a car. Taxis work for an evening in Bardolino, but the point of staying here is to combine the lake, the wineries and Verona, and a rental gives you that freedom. Our Italy travel planner covers transfers, car hire and practical details.
The estate: Vigneti Villabella
This is what sets Villa Cordevigo apart from the many pretty villas around Garda. The house is the hospitality heart of Vigneti Villabella, a winery founded in 1971 by the Cristoforetti and Delibori families in nearby Calmasino and now run by the next generation. The wider estate around the villa covers around 100 hectares of vineyards and olive groves, and part of the land is farmed organically.
The villa itself has Renaissance origins and was reshaped in the 18th century, which is why you will read different dates in different sources. Inside you find frescoes, painted ceilings and period furniture, and a small chapel overlooks the courtyard.
Villabella makes wines across the Veronese appellations: Bardolino and Chiaretto di Bardolino, Valpolicella including Ripasso and Amarone, plus Lugana, Custoza and Soave. The Villa Cordevigo crus come from the vines around the house, and the Chiaretto from this estate has been reviewed by international wine critics, so it is worth tasting even if rosé is not usually your thing.
Rooms and suites
The hotel is small and the rooms are spread across the historic villa and its outbuildings. Room counts are inconsistent across sources: some booking partners list 23 rooms, others 33 or 34, and a 2022 announcement of two new suites put the total at 40. The safest reading is a boutique property of a few dozen rooms. Ask the hotel which building your room is in.
- Classic and Tradizione rooms: the entry categories, roughly 22 to 36 m², with period furniture and beamed ceilings.
- Elegance rooms: a step up in size and decoration, around 31 to 33 m².
- Junior suites: around 35 to 46 m², with a separate sitting area.
- Suites with terrace: the categories with private outdoor space, some with an outdoor whirlpool tub.
- Astolfo and Gaudenzia suites: added in 2022 and named after former owners of the villa, with an entrance hall, a sitting room with a central fireplace, Venetian seminato floors and a large bathroom.
- Bishop’s Suite: a historic suite with a fireplace and a painted ceiling.
The style is classic rather than contemporary: antiques, rich fabrics, original features. If you prefer clean modern lines and floor-to-ceiling glass, this is the wrong house. If you like sleeping in a room with some history, it is a pleasure.
Dining
For a hotel of this size, the dining is the main event, and it is built around the estate’s wines.
Oseleta
Oseleta is listed with one Michelin star in the 2026 guide, under chef Marco Marras, a Sardinian chef who has led the kitchen for several years. The restaurant sits in a separate building at the entrance to the grounds and shares its name with Oseleta, a rare native Veronese red grape. Michelin describes the cooking as creative and contemporary, with two tasting menus (one of them vegetarian) and an à la carte menu that draws on the Veronese and Garda territory as well as wider influences. There are two dining rooms, but on a warm evening the veranda over the garden and pool is the table to ask for.
Check the days before you plan around it. According to Michelin, Oseleta is closed on Tuesdays, serves dinner only from Monday to Friday and adds lunch at weekends. It is popular with non-residents too, so book when you book your room.
Ristorante Cordevigo and the bar
The second restaurant, Ristorante Cordevigo, is the relaxed option, with classic Italian and Veronese dishes. Some partners note that it operates mainly in the warmer months, so ask the hotel what is open during your stay. The Fiordilej Bar is the place for an aperitivo with a glass of Chiaretto before dinner.
Wine tastings
Tastings of the estate’s wines and olive oil are offered on site, with a dedicated tasting room, the Sala Fracastoro. Expect Bardolino, Chiaretto and the Valpolicella wines, often finishing with Amarone. The exact format, price and whether a cellar or vineyard walk is included are not published in a consistent way, so ask the hotel when you book.

Spa and pool

The Essentia Spa holds the Relais & Châteaux spa label and is reserved for hotel guests. At about 250 m² it is compact, a place for an afternoon of rest rather than a full wellness programme. Facilities include:
- Heat: an infrared sauna and a hammam.
- Water: a whirlpool tub and sensory showers.
- Rest: a relaxation room with a salt wall and a tea room.
- Treatments: massages, facials and body treatments using natural cosmetics made with cold-pressed plant oils, plus a fitness room.
Outside, there is a seasonal outdoor pool in the gardens with a sun terrace, open in the warmer months. Some listings also mention a tennis court on the grounds. I could not confirm that it is currently in use, so ask the hotel if you plan to play.
If a large spa with several pools is a priority, look at the resorts on the lake itself (see the comparison below). Villa Cordevigo is about wine, food and the villa, with the spa as a pleasant extra.
Activities: wine country, the lake and Verona

- Bardolino and Garda: lakeside promenades, wine bars and boat connections around the lake. Our Lake Garda guide covers Sirmione, boat trips, wineries and spas.
- Verona: the Arena, the summer opera festival and excellent restaurants, about half an hour away. Read our Verona, Valpolicella and Lake Garda guide to plan the day.
- Valpolicella: Amarone country starts just east of the Adige valley. See our Valpolicella and Amarone wine tours for estates and routes.
- Cycling and walking: the lanes through the vineyards and olive groves of the Bardolino hills are gentle and scenic. Ask the hotel about bike hire.
Villa Cordevigo also features in our guide to the best vineyard hotels and wine resorts in Italy, where it represents the Lake Garda and Bardolino corner of Italian wine country.
Villa Cordevigo vs other Lake Garda luxury hotels
| Hotel | Location | Standout | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa Cordevigo Wine Relais | Cavaion Veronese, Bardolino hills | Working wine estate, historic villa, Michelin-starred Oseleta | Wine and food lovers, couples |
| Quellenhof Luxury Resort Lazise | Lazise, eastern shore | 2,000 m² spa, adults-only Sky Pool, tennis and padel | Active couples and families |
| Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda | Gargnano, western shore | Spa of around 3,800 m², infinity pool, lake views | Serious wellness holidays |
| QC Termegarda Spa & Golf Resort | Calvagese della Riviera, south-west hills | 27 holes at the door, large spa | Golfers |
In short: the Quellenhof is the better choice for spa, pools and sport (read our Quellenhof Lazise review), Lefay wins on pure wellness, and Villa Cordevigo is the one to pick when the wine and the dinner matter more than the facilities list.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits:
- Wine lovers who want to sleep on the estate and taste Bardolino, Chiaretto and Amarone at the source.
- Food-focused couples who want a starred dinner without driving afterwards.
- Travellers who want one base for Lake Garda, Valpolicella and Verona.
- Guests who like historic interiors, frescoes and a quiet, small-hotel atmosphere.
It does not suit:
- Those who want to step out of the hotel onto the lakefront.
- Spa lovers who need multiple pools and a large wellness area.
- Families looking for kids’ clubs, slides and children’s programmes.
- Travellers without a car who want to explore independently every day.
Charlotte’s tip: plan your nights around Oseleta
Build the stay around two dinners: Oseleta on a night it is open, and a simpler evening in Bardolino or Lazise. Book the tasting in the afternoon of your Oseleta day, so you already know which Villabella wines you want with dinner. And pick late May, June or September: the pool is open, the vineyards are green or heavy with grapes, and the lake is calmer than in August.
Practical tips
- Booking: reserve Oseleta and the wine tasting when you book the room. With a small hotel and a starred restaurant open to outside guests, tables go quickly.
- Best rooms to request: a suite with terrace for outdoor space, or the Astolfo or Gaudenzia suite for a fireplace and more room. Ask for a vineyard or garden outlook.
- Season: the hotel has closed from early January to late March or early April in recent years, and Oseleta has its own annual closure. Confirm dates before planning an off-season trip.
- Harvest time: September and early October bring the grape harvest. Ask whether any harvest activities are offered for guests.
- Dress: relaxed by day, smart casual for Oseleta.
- Kids: children are welcome and family rooms exist, but this is a quiet adult-leaning house. Ask the hotel about cots and age policies.
