Castello di Guarene Review (2026): A Baroque Castle Facing the Langhe

Traditional village in Piedmont from above

Castello di Guarene is the rare wine country hotel where the building is the destination. An 18th century Baroque residence of the Counts Roero, it stands on top of a Roero hill village and looks straight across the Tanaro valley to the Langhe, with the Alps behind on clear days. There are only 12 rooms and suites, a spa and indoor pool carved into the rock beneath the castle, formal Italian gardens and a restaurant serving Piedmontese classics under brick vaults. My one-line verdict: arguably the most romantic castle stay in the Alba area, as long as you want history and quiet rather than a resort with a full activity programme.

Location and getting there

Barbaresco vineyards under a blue sky

Guarene sits on the left bank of the Tanaro, in the Roero, the sandier hill country that faces the Langhe across the river from Alba. The castle crowns the village, so the views run in almost every direction: south over the Langhe ridges towards Barbaresco and Barolo, east towards Asti and the Monferrato, and north-west to the Alps when the air is clear. The Langhe vineyard landscape you see from the terraces is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Alba, with its Saturday market, wine bars and the autumn truffle fair, is only a short drive away. Barbaresco is close too, and the Barolo villages are within reach for a day of tastings, though allow more time to reach La Morra or Serralunga. A car, or a driver booked through the concierge, is essential here: this is a hilltop village, not a town centre base.

The hotel’s Relais & Châteaux listing gives the A33 Asti to Cuneo motorway (exit Castagnito) as the road approach. For flights, booking platforms estimate about 59 minutes from Cuneo Levaldigi and about 79 minutes from Turin Caselle; Milan Malpensa and Linate are around 170 km, so plan on roughly two hours or more. The nearest mainline station is Asti, about 20 km away. Paid airport transfers can be arranged.

Rooms and suites

The hotel has 12 rooms and suites, a figure confirmed by Relais & Châteaux, the Michelin Guide’s hotel selection and major booking sites. (One smaller travel site lists 15 rooms; we believe 12 is correct, but you can confirm with the hotel.) Rooms keep the castle’s original period furniture and artworks, with silk and velvet fabrics, antique floors and, in some categories, four-poster beds and working fireplaces. Modern comforts are there too: air conditioning, Wi-Fi, minibar and safe, plus a lift between floors.

The six categories, from smallest to largest, are:

  • Classic Room: the entry level, with a balcony or terrace.
  • Castle Room: a little larger, also with a balcony or terrace.
  • Castle Deluxe Room: around 55 m², with a fireplace and room for a third guest.
  • Castle Suite: around 70 m², with a fireplace, sleeping up to four.
  • Castle Luxury Room: around 85 m², with a fireplace.
  • Castle Luxury Suite: the grandest space in the house, with a fireplace.

A note on sizes: our research turned up contradictory information. Relais & Châteaux lists the Classic Room at 35 m² and the Luxury Suite at 160 m², while the Michelin Guide and other sources give 40 m² and 200 m². It was not clear to us which applies, so if size matters, confirm with the hotel before you book.

The noble floor of the castle is also a house museum, with around fifteen rooms along the counts’ original apartments, including two Chinese rooms, a library and the Stanza del Vescovo. Ask the hotel about visiting times during your stay.

Dining

The castle’s restaurant, Ristorante Limonaia, serves refined Piedmontese cooking with creative touches, built on local produce and paired with wines from the surrounding hills. Descriptions of the castle’s dining spaces mention brick vaults, tall columns and old frescoes, and in season the white truffle of Alba takes centre stage. Relais & Châteaux lists the restaurant as open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, with outdoor seating and vegetarian options. For special occasions, the hotel offers private dinners in the castle’s Chinese rooms.

Who leads the kitchen in 2026 was unclear in our research: the restaurant’s Relais & Châteaux page names two different chefs. Ask the hotel who is cooking when you visit.

On Michelin: the castle appears in the Michelin Guide’s hotel selection, but I could not find Ristorante Limonaia among the starred restaurants in the 2026 guide, and I could not confirm a Michelin Key for the hotel. That is no hardship here. You are surrounded by some of Italy’s most decorated dining rooms, from Piazza Duomo in Alba to La Rei Natura at Il Boscareto, which holds three stars in the 2026 guide (see our Il Boscareto review).

Spa and pools

Indoor pool surrounded by elegant arches

The spa is the castle’s surprise. You reach it along a long, brick-vaulted corridor, and the heated indoor pool sits in a space carved into the rock of the hill. Relais & Châteaux gives the wellness area as around 800 m², which is generous for a 12-room hotel.

  • Indoor pool: heated and set into the rock, the signature feature.
  • Heat and water: sauna, hammam, hot tub, a Kneipp path and a chromotherapy shower.
  • Treatments: massages including Ayurvedic massage, body treatments and a wine-themed ritual using local wines, with Comfort Zone and Sothys products.
  • Extras: a fitness room, a beauty centre, a solarium and a terrace looking over the surrounding villages.

Outdoor pool: our research turned up contradictory information here. The Michelin Guide’s listing mentions both an outdoor and an indoor pool, while Relais & Châteaux and booking platforms describe only the indoor pool in the rock. It was not clear to us whether an outdoor pool is available, so ask the hotel if summer swimming in the open air matters to you.

Gardens, wine and activities

The gardens are laid out in 18th century Italian style, with yew hedges, hornbeams and cypresses framing views over the hills, and a renovation restored them to their original look, according to a 2019 Michelin Guide feature.

Wine

The castle has no vineyard of its own, unlike some of its neighbours, but it is an excellent base for wine. The Roero is known for white Arneis and a lighter, perfumed style of Nebbiolo, and Barbaresco and Barolo lie across the river. The hotel can arrange winery and cellar visits, tastings and wine courses, and its cellar holds rare Piedmontese bottles. Our guide to wine hotels in the Langhe picks it as the best castle stay in the area, and our guide to what Piedmont is famous for explains the region’s wines and food.

Truffles and the outdoors

Truffle hunts can be arranged, usually in October and November when the white truffle season peaks. The hotel also lists cycling and e-bike or bicycle rental, mountain biking, hiking, Nordic walking, horse riding and hot-air balloon flights over the hills. Golfers will find a 9-hole and an 18-hole course nearby; ask the concierge about tee times.

What it does not have

There are no tennis or padel courts on site, and no kids’ club. This is a quiet house for slow days, not a sports resort.

What’s nearby

White truffles in a glass bowl
  • Alba: the truffle capital, with the International White Truffle Fair in autumn, wine bars and the Saturday market.
  • Barbaresco: a small village with its tower and wine shops, close to the castle across the Tanaro.
  • The Barolo villages: La Morra, Barolo and Serralunga d’Alba for tastings and long lunches.
  • Turin: a good day out for vermouth, chocolate and museums. Read our Turin food guide.
  • Moscato country: the hills around Santo Stefano Belbo, covered in our guide to Moscato d’Asti.

Castello di Guarene vs other Langhe luxury hotels

Hotel Location Standout Best for
Castello di Guarene Guarene, Roero 18th century castle, 12 rooms, spa and pool carved into the rock Romance and history close to Alba
Relais San Maurizio Santo Stefano Belbo 17th century monastery, spa of over 1,000 m² Spa lovers
Palas Cerequio La Morra A handful of suites in a Barolo cru, Michele Chiarlo estate Barolo devotees
Casa di Langa Cerretto Langhe Modern resort on a 42 hectare estate, heated pool Contemporary luxury

In short: choose Relais San Maurizio for a bigger spa and more facilities, Palas Cerequio to sleep among Barolo vines, and Casa di Langa for a polished modern resort. Castello di Guarene wins when you want a genuine historic castle, intimate scale and a quick hop into Alba.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits:

  • Couples celebrating something: fireplaces, frescoes and a castle garden at sunset do the work for you.
  • History and architecture lovers who want to sleep inside a working house museum.
  • Truffle season visitors who want to be close to Alba without staying in town.
  • Wine travellers happy to drive, or be driven, to Barbaresco and Barolo tastings.

It does not suit:

  • Families wanting a kids’ club or lots of outdoor space for children.
  • Travellers who want tennis, padel or a large outdoor pool scene.
  • Guests who prefer sleek modern design over antiques and period fabrics.
  • Anyone who wants to walk to a choice of restaurants every evening.

Charlotte’s tip: book a fireplace room for autumn

Aim for late October, when the vines turn gold and red and the truffle fair is in full swing, and book at least a Castle Deluxe Room so you have a fireplace for the cooler evenings. Ask for a room facing the Langhe rather than the village. Then book one starred dinner nearby well ahead.

Practical tips

  • Booking: for October and November, book months ahead. With 12 rooms, there is little slack.
  • Best rooms to request: any category with a fireplace for autumn and winter, a Classic or Castle Room with a terrace for summer, and the Castle Luxury Suite for a special occasion.
  • Season: we found no published 2026 opening calendar or winter closure, so check with the hotel for January and February stays.
  • Dress: smart casual for dinner under the vaults; bring layers, as hilltop evenings cool quickly outside summer.
  • Kids: children are welcome, with cots and babysitting on request, but extra charges apply for cots and extra beds. Ask the hotel for current rates.
  • Pets: sources disagree. Some listings say well-behaved dogs are welcome for a fee (but not in the spa), while one booking site’s terms say pets are not allowed. Confirm with the hotel.
