Terme di Saturnia Review (2026): Hot Springs, Golf and Maremma Calm

Natural thermal springs near Saturnia from above

Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf Resort is built around something no designer can copy: a sulphurous spring that rises at a steady 37.5°C and fills a large natural pool right below the hotel terrace. Add an 18-hole championship course by Ronald Fream, a spa with dozens of treatment rooms and the quiet hills of the southern Maremma, and you have one of the most distinctive wellness resorts in Italy. My one-line verdict: come for the water and the golf, accept that the hotel itself is a large, busy resort rather than an intimate boutique hideaway.

Location and getting there

Green fields and hot springs in the Maremma

Saturnia sits in the far south of Tuscany, in the soft volcanic hills between Monte Amiata and the sea. The resort occupies a 120-hectare estate below the village, with the spring, the hotel and the golf course spread across the valley floor. The hotel opened in August 1919, though people bathed here long before.

This is not a place you reach by train and taxi in ten minutes. The nearest stations are Capalbio and Albinia (about 45 km), Orbetello (55 km) and Grosseto (60 km). Rome Fiumicino, about 150 km away, is the most practical airport, at roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by car. Pisa is about 220 km away, around two and a half hours. A rental car makes sense; our Val d’Orcia road trip ends conveniently within reach of Saturnia.

Rooms and suites

The hotel lists 124 rooms and suites, which makes it one of the larger luxury properties in rural Tuscany. Our research turned up contradictory information here: the hotel’s pages and recent trade press say 124, while the regional tourism portal lists 128. It was not clear to us which applies. The categories are:

  • Superior and Superior Spring View: the entry level; the Spring View version looks over the steaming natural pool.
  • Deluxe, Junior Suite and Garden Junior Suite: more space, and in the garden version direct outdoor space.
  • Thermal Pool Junior Suites (new for 2026): four ground-floor suites, each with a private pool fed by Saturnia’s thermal water and an exclusive garden. Trade press reported they were due to open before the final quarter of 2026, so check availability with the hotel.
  • Suite and Grand Suite: the largest standard units.
  • The Saturnia Suite: a new 108 m² suite with two bedrooms and three bathrooms, designed by Studio Marco Piva around the Maremma themes of water, earth and light.

The hotel does not publish room sizes for most categories, so ask the hotel if square metres matter to you. Pets are welcome under the resort’s VIPets programme; ask about fees and which rooms are pet friendly.

Dining

Dining was revamped in 2024: the resort, golf club and Club area reopened on 24 July 2024 after renovation works, with a redesigned 1919 Restaurant and an extended La Stellata. Executive Chef Salvatore Quarto oversees the kitchens.

  • 1919 Restaurant: the main restaurant, which the hotel calls the oldest “pied dans l’eau” restaurant in the Maremma. It took the name in 2019 to mark the hotel’s centenary, and its veranda looks straight over the spring. Seasonal menu, daily specials and lighter dishes; book dinner in advance.
  • La Stellata: a country restaurant in a farmhouse overlooking the golf course, with a pergola, a veranda and an open grill at the centre. Expect Tuscan classics; it closes on some weekdays, so check the schedule.
  • Il Bar Drink & Food Library: coffee, aperitivo and light lunches, with a platform above the spring.
  • The Bistro and Patio: poolside all-day dishes, salads and poke, with coeliac-friendly options.

An honest note on Michelin: none of the resort’s restaurants holds a Michelin star in 2026. The hotel describes 1919 as listed in the Michelin Guide, but I could not find it on the guide’s Saturnia page, so treat that as unconfirmed. You may read online about a starred restaurant called All’Acquacotta here; that belongs to an earlier era of the resort and is not part of the current line-up. For a starred dinner, drive ten minutes to Montemerano, home of Caino, one of the best-known starred restaurants in the Maremma.

Spa and pools

Cascading hot springs of the Cascate del Mulino

Everything here starts with the spring. The water emerges at a constant 37.5°C, is rich in sulphur, and flows into a large natural pool that forms the centre of the thermal park. The resort describes the bathing area as an oasis of around 20,000 m². Hotel guests get unlimited access, included in the room rate, to:

  • The Natural Hot Spring and thermal pools: whirlpools, hydromassage jets and a Kneipp course. On Friday evenings the spring stays open until midnight for “Bathing under the stars”.
  • The Roman Bath: sauna and Turkish bath, with a new infrared sauna and a redesigned Turkish bath announced for 2026.
  • Indoor wellness: sensory rooms, a Finnish sauna and reaction showers.
  • Il Casale relaxation rooms: a restored farmhouse with the Hay Room, Cocoon Room and Silence Room.
  • The Rituals Sauna: a new sauna in the Spring Park dedicated to Aufguss ceremonies.

Treatments are a serious business: trade press counts 54 treatment rooms. The menu covers facials, massages, wellness rituals, aesthetic medicine and naturopathy, and the Medical Spa adds consultations, check-ups, cryotherapy and thermal treatments. From September 2026 a new longevity programme adds diagnostics, skin, energy and nutrition tracks and a personal Care Manager; ask the hotel for prices.

One thing to know: the thermal park also welcomes day visitors, and the resort reported more than 105,000 park and Club visits in 2025. Weekends can feel busy, so bathe early or late. A full refurbishment of the thermal park is planned for 2027, so ask whether any areas are affected on your dates.

Sport and activities

Golf

The Terme di Saturnia Golf Club is the reason the resort features in our guide to golf hotels in Tuscany. Ronald Fream of Golfplan laid out the 18-hole, par 72 course across 70 hectares of rolling Maremma countryside, with views towards Monte Amiata. It measures 6,316 metres from the back tees, with shorter sets down to 4,417 metres. It opened to hotel guests at the end of 2007 and has held GEO environmental certification since 2014; the club says it uses no insecticides or pesticides.

The clubhouse is inside the hotel. Practice facilities are generous: 43 driving range bays (nine of them covered), a pitching green, a putting green and a practice bunker. Use of the driving range is included in the room rate; full rounds come with the Golf & Spa packages or are paid separately, so check what your rate includes. PGA-qualified instructors run lessons and clinics for all levels, including juniors. For green fees and buggies, ask the hotel. For the wider picture, see our guide to golf in Tuscany.

Everything else

  • Included in the stay: a 24-hour gym, a tennis court, a daily guided morning walk and free e-bike rental for up to two hours.
  • Retreats: yoga, meditation, Qi Gong and guided breathing programmes on set dates.
  • Outdoors: riding, hiking and cycling, plus canoeing in the Maremma Regional Park.

What’s nearby

  • Cascate del Mulino: the famous free hot spring cascades below Saturnia village, fed by the same water. Go at dawn.
  • Saturnia, Montemerano and Manciano: small hill villages for an aperitivo and dinner; Montemerano is home to Caino.
  • Pitigliano and Sovana: the tufa towns of the “Città del Tufo”, well under an hour by car.
  • The Argentario: less than an hour to the sea at Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano, for seafood lunches and boat trips.

Terme di Saturnia vs other southern Tuscany luxury hotels

Hotel Location Standout Best for
Terme di Saturnia Saturnia, inland Maremma 37.5°C natural spring, 18-hole Fream course, large medical spa Spa and golf, winter breaks
Hotel Il Pellicano Porto Ercole, Argentario Cliffside sea views, glamorous summer scene Summer sea holidays (seasonal, April to October)
Argentario Golf & Wellness Resort Porto Ercole Tournament-standard course near the sea Golfers who want coaching and the sea
Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco Montalcino, Val d’Orcia Private 18-hole course, Brunello estate Golf and wine at the top end

In short: Il Pellicano is the summer sea choice and closes in winter, the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is the more exclusive golf and wine estate, while Saturnia is the one to pick when the spa matters as much as the golf, or when you travel between November and March.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits:

  • Spa travellers who want natural thermal water rather than a heated pool with a treatment menu.
  • Couples where one plays golf and the other prefers to spend the day in the water.
  • Travellers looking for a warm, restorative break in Tuscany in autumn or winter.
  • Guests interested in medical spa, detox or longevity programmes.

It does not suit:

  • Anyone looking for a small, intimate boutique hotel: with about 124 rooms and day visitors in the park, it is a large operation.
  • Food lovers who want a Michelin-starred restaurant in-house.
  • Travellers sensitive to the smell of sulphur.
  • Beach lovers who want the sea outside the door; the coast is up to an hour away.

Charlotte’s tip: book the view, then bathe in the dark

Always pay for a Spring View room here: opening the curtains onto the steaming pool is half the experience. Swim at opening time, play golf when the park fills up, and save Friday for midnight bathing. In November or February, with mist over the water and the course to yourself, Saturnia is arguably at its best.

Practical tips

  • Booking: reserve treatments, golf tee times and dinner at 1919 when you book the room, especially for spring weekends and Italian holidays.
  • Best rooms to request: Superior Spring View for the view at a fair price, a Thermal Pool Junior Suite for privacy, the Saturnia Suite for families or two couples.
  • Season: autumn, winter and early spring suit the warm water best; summer afternoons can be hot and crowded. Confirm opening on your dates, as the resort has closed for works in the past and the thermal park is due for refurbishment in 2027.
  • What to pack: old swimwear (sulphur can discolour fabric), flip-flops, and leave silver jewellery in the safe.
  • Kids: children are welcome and junior golf lessons are available. Ask the hotel about age rules for the spa, saunas and treatment areas.
