The Ortea Palace Hotel, Autograph Collection, occupies the former Palazzo delle Poste, the grand 1920s post and telegraph office that stands at the northern entrance to Ortigia, the island old town of Syracuse. After decades empty, the building now holds 75 rooms and suites, a courtyard restaurant under a glass roof, a rooftop dining room and a subterranean spa with a mosaic pool. It is a city hotel, not a resort: no beach, no tennis, no garden. My one-line verdict: arguably the most striking historic building you can sleep in on Ortigia, ideal for a few nights of baroque streets and harbour views, with the I Monasteri golf course a short drive away.

Location and getting there

Ortea Palace sits on Ortigia itself, at the point where the bridges from mainland Syracuse land on the island. The front looks over the Porto Piccolo, the small harbour full of fishing boats and yachts, and the rest of the old town opens up behind you. The Temple of Apollo and the market are a few minutes on foot, and Piazza Duomo and the Fountain of Arethusa around 15 minutes through the lanes. You get a waterfront address on the island without dragging luggage deep into its narrow streets.
It also helps if you drive. Marriott notes that the hotel is outside Ortigia’s ZTL, the limited traffic zone, so you can reach the door without risking a fine; just do not follow your satnav further into the island. Valet parking is offered at around €50 per day, and cars are parked in public lots nearby, where self-parking costs much less. Ask the hotel for current rates.
Catania Fontanarossa is the natural airport, about 67 km away, so allow roughly an hour by car. Marriott points to the Interbus coach from the airport as a budget option, and our guide to Catania airport transfers compares private cars, buses and taxis. Syracuse station is about a 15 minute walk away.
The building
The Palazzo delle Poste was designed by the Catanian architect Francesco Fichera and built over nine years from 1920. Postal services left around 2000, and the building stood empty for years before a long, heritage-supervised restoration. It is owned by the Russotti family’s hotel group, a Marriott franchisee. The hotel first traded as Ortea Palace Luxury Hotel and became the first Autograph Collection hotel in Sicily in 2023. Sources disagree on the year it first opened to guests, so I have left that date out.
The restoration kept the limestone facade, a marble floored atrium under a tall glass roof and inscriptions from the post office days. The courtyard where letters and telegrams were once handled is now the main restaurant.
Rooms and suites
There are 75 rooms and suites, and 49 of them are suites, which is an unusually high share. Categories are named after typefaces, a nod to the building’s past. Expect marble floors, Italian design furniture, deep marble bathtubs and Diptyque toiletries.
- Roundhand rooms: the entry category. Reviewers note that these have no sea view, and some interior facing rooms feel dark.
- Bauhaus and other classic rooms: a step up, with partial sea views in some cases.
- Duplex suites (such as Edwardian and Fraktur Family Duplex): two levels with the bedroom upstairs, a living area below, two bathrooms in some layouts and a soaking tub. The family versions work well for parents with one or two children.
- Signature Suite: top floor with a sea view, a living room, a small office, a dressing room, a large bathtub and a balcony.
- Autograph Tower Suite: around 95 m² over a main floor and a mezzanine, with two balconies and floor to ceiling windows. This is the one for a special occasion.
Names and views vary between booking channels, so if a harbour view matters, ask the hotel to confirm the room type.
Dining
There are three places to eat and drink, all inside the building.
- Il Cortile: the main restaurant, set in the historic courtyard, serving Mediterranean and Sicilian dishes. Marriott lists it as open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is a large buffet with Sicilian cheeses, cured meats, pastries and cakes, plus à la carte dishes and made to order coffee.
- Incanto: the rooftop restaurant and terrace with views over the harbour, serving refined takes on Sicilian and Italian classics. In 2025 Il Giornale named Salvatore Barbara as the chef of the hotel’s upper floor restaurant; ask the hotel whether he is still in charge. One 2024 guest review reported that Incanto opened only on certain evenings and for events, so check the current schedule before you plan a dinner around it.
- Champagnetta: the bar across the atrium, open daily from late morning to midnight, with cocktails using Sicilian spirits and, on some evenings, live piano.
An honest note on Michelin: neither Il Cortile nor Incanto holds a star in the 2026 Michelin Guide, and Ortea Palace does not hold a Michelin Key in the 2026 selection, although the Michelin Guide does list it as a recommended hotel. For a starred dinner, ask the concierge which of Ortigia’s Michelin-listed restaurants are open on your dates.
Spa and pool

The spa is below ground and is the hotel’s most memorable space after the atrium. The entrance is designed to evoke an ancient temple, and the indoor pool is surrounded by intricate mosaics. One reviewer measured the basin at 1.5 metres deep, so it is for swimming and floating rather than diving.
- Indoor pool and whirlpool: the heart of the spa, in use all year.
- Heat: a sauna and a Turkish bath style steam room with tiled interiors.
- Treatments: massages and facials, plus a newer multisensory treatment room called La Nuvola that combines sound, light and movement.
Two caveats: there is no outdoor pool, and spa access works by reservation, with opening hours from late morning to early evening, so book your slot on arrival or before you travel in high season. Ask the hotel whether spa entry is included in your rate.
Sport and activities
As a converted city palazzo, Ortea Palace has no tennis court, padel court or golf on site. The fitness room in the basement is open 24 hours and free for guests, but several reviewers describe it as small and basic.
Golf at I Monasteri
The nearest course is the 18 hole I Monasteri, now part of the Dolce by Wyndham Siracusa I Monasteri Golf & Spa resort, in the countryside west of the city and about 20 minutes away by car depending on traffic. Play in the morning, walk Ortigia at sunset: that is why it features in our guide to golf hotels in Sicily. One important caveat: the I Monasteri website states that the course was closed for renovation with a reopening announced for November 2026, so confirm that it is open before you plan a golf trip (our I Monasteri review has the details). The hotel does not publish a golf package or green fee discount, so ask the concierge to arrange tee times and transfers. For the island’s bigger golf names, see our overview of golf in Sicily at Verdura and Il Picciolo.
On and in the water
In summer, locals swim from the rocks and sun platforms around Ortigia, and boat trips circle the island to the sea caves and the Plemmirio marine reserve. Sandy beaches such as Fontane Bianche and the Vendicari reserve are a drive south.

Ortea Palace vs other Sicilian luxury hotels
| Hotel | Location | Standout | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ortea Palace Hotel, Autograph Collection | Ortigia, Syracuse | 1920s post office, mosaic spa pool, rooftop dining, I Monasteri about 20 minutes | City culture with golf on the side |
| Dolce by Wyndham Siracusa I Monasteri | Countryside west of Syracuse | 18 holes on site, spa (both under renovation until November 2026) | Golfers who want to walk to the first tee |
| Grand Hotel Timeo | Taormina | Gardens beside the Greek Theatre, Etna views, two Michelin Keys | Classic grand hotel glamour |
| Rocco Forte Villa Igiea | Palermo | Art Nouveau villa on the sea with gardens and pool, two Michelin Keys | A resort feel within a big city |
In short: if you want golf at the door, stay at I Monasteri once the course has reopened. If you want a full grand hotel with gardens and an outdoor pool, read our Grand Hotel Timeo review or our Villa Igiea review. Ortea Palace wins when the point of the trip is Ortigia itself.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits:
- Couples who want to walk everywhere on Ortigia and come back to a quiet, characterful building.
- Architecture and history lovers.
- Golfers who want a round at I Monasteri by day and restaurants by night.
It does not suit:
- Anyone who wants an outdoor pool, a garden or a private beach.
- Tennis and padel players, as there are no courts.
- Fitness fans who need a large, well equipped gym.
- Food lovers who want a Michelin-starred restaurant in-house.
Charlotte’s tip: book a duplex and skip the entry rooms
The entry rooms without a view do not show off the building. Pay for a duplex or sea view suite, then plan the day around the light: the market in the morning, the spa pool in the afternoon heat, an aperitivo by the harbour at dusk.
Practical tips

- Booking: check whether breakfast is included, and book spa slots and any Incanto dinner when you confirm the room.
- Best rooms to request: a sea view suite, a Fraktur Family Duplex for families, or the Autograph Tower Suite for a celebration. Avoid interior facing rooms if light matters to you.
- Season: Ortigia is best from April to June and in September and October. Marriott shows no winter closure, which makes this a solid off-season city break, but confirm rooftop opening on your dates.
- Arrival: check-in is from 15:00 and check-out at 12:00. Drive to the hotel, not into the ZTL, and hand over the car.
- Dress: smart casual in the restaurants.
- Kids and pets: children of all ages are welcome, and pets are allowed for a fee. Ask the hotel about extra beds and childcare.
