Rocco Forte Villa Igiea is the hotel Palermo had been missing for years: the Florio family’s Art Nouveau palace at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, restored and reopened in 2021, with terraced gardens running down to its own small harbour on the Gulf of Palermo. It gives you something no hotel in the historic centre can, which is a city stay with a pool, a sea-view tennis court, a spa and a boat at the bottom of the garden. My one-line verdict: arguably the most rewarding place to stay in Palermo if you want history and a resort feel together, as long as you accept that you are ten minutes from the old town, not in it.

A short history: from admiral’s villa to Florio palace
The story starts with a neo-Gothic villa built for a retired British admiral, Cecil Domville. At the end of the 19th century the Florios, the shipping, wine and tuna dynasty that dominated Belle Époque Palermo, bought it (the hotel gives 1899), and Ignazio Florio named it after his daughter Igiea. The plan was a sanatorium; the result was a grand hotel. Palermo’s leading architect Ernesto Basile, who also completed the Teatro Massimo, reshaped it in Art Nouveau style, known in Italy as Liberty.
For much of the 20th century it hosted royalty, politicians and film stars. After years of decline, Rocco Forte Hotels bought it in late 2018 for around 25.5 million euros, restored it over two years and reopened it in June 2021, with interiors by Olga Polizzi and designer Paolo Moschino. The Basile salon and the Louis XVI hall that now holds the Florio restaurant still feel like the Florios’ party rooms rather than a museum.
Location and getting there

Villa Igiea sits in Acquasanta, a harbour quarter north of the port, with Monte Pellegrino behind it and the gulf in front. You get quiet, gardens and open sea views that central Palermo hotels cannot offer, but you need a short ride into town: the Michelin Guide puts the centre about ten minutes away, and the hotel runs a complimentary shuttle bus to downtown Palermo.
Palermo airport is about 30 minutes by car along the coast motorway, and the hotel arranges airport and station transfers. Mondello’s beach is about 15 minutes away. Valet parking is available if you drive, and Michelin lists on-site parking as paid. For a wider look at the city’s neighbourhoods and the alternatives in the old town, read our guide on where to stay in Palermo.
Rooms and suites
There are 100 keys in four categories: rooms, junior suites, suites and Forte Suites. The look is Polizzi at her most Sicilian: colours of sea, sand and local stone, antiques mixed with handmade furniture, Carrara marble bathrooms with walk-in showers, handmade Sicilian floor tiles, and separate soaking tubs in some categories. Individual room sizes are not published, so if space matters, ask the hotel about the specific room type.
- Rooms: the entry level, with garden or sea views. Sea view is worth paying for here, because the gulf is the reason to stay out of the centre.
- Junior suites and suites: more space, many with terraces, plus Suites and Beyond benefits such as in-suite check-in.
- Palazzina Donna Franca: a restored wing next to the main villa, where the Florios’ Cercle des Etrangers once met, with 12 rooms and suites over two floors. The Donna Franca Suite is 144 m² with a private terrace of around 90 m².
- Penthouse option: two top-floor sea-view suites in the Palazzina can be combined, sharing a terrace of around 410 m². The whole wing can also be booked for a family celebration.
Dining
Food is overseen by Fulvio Pierangelini, Rocco Forte’s creative food director, best known for his former restaurant Gambero Rosso on the Tuscan coast. His style is deliberately simple: very good fish, fresh pasta, frying done properly.
- Florio: the main restaurant in the original Louis XVI hall, serving classic Sicilian cooking at dinner (19:00 to 22:00) and breakfast. Smart casual after 19:30; shorts, sleeveless shirts and sandals are not allowed. Sunday brunch with live music starts at 85 euros per person.
- Alicetta: the relaxed option by the pool, in a metal pavilion inspired by the one at Palazzo Butera, with fish, pasta and Sicilian pizza at lunch.
- Igiea Terrazza Bar: stone vaults and a terrace over the gulf, with a cocktail list by Salvatore Calabrese and a long line of Florio liqueurs. This is where Palermo comes for aperitivo.
- Forte Vita Bar: healthy drinks and light food in the spa.
On Michelin: the hotel holds two Michelin Keys, but I could not find a Michelin star for Florio in the current guide. Think of it as a very good hotel restaurant rather than a gastronomic destination, and use Palermo’s own restaurants for at least one or two of your dinners.

Spa and pool
The Irene Forte Spa is a compact city spa rather than a resort wellness centre. According to the 2026 brochure it has five treatment rooms, one of them a double, plus a relaxation room with an outdoor terrace, a beauty corner and a 24-hour gym. Treatments use Irene Forte skincare, made with Sicilian botanicals, some of them grown on the organic farm at sister resort Verdura. Do not book it for a sauna holiday.
The outdoor pool sits in the terraced gardens above the sea, and for many guests it is the best place in the hotel to spend an afternoon. Michelin lists it as seasonal; whether it is heated and when it opens and closes is not published, so ask the hotel if you are travelling outside summer. When the pool is closed, the sea is still there: the hotel has promoted winter wild swimming in the gulf.
Sport and activities

Tennis
Villa Igiea has one outdoor tennis court with views over the Gulf of Palermo, which is why it features in our guide to tennis hotels in Sicily as the best city option. The court can be booked from sunrise to sunset, and the concierge arranges private lessons and group sessions with professional coaches, including cardio tennis, which ends conveniently close to the pool. The surface and lesson prices are not published, so ask the hotel. With only one court, reserve your slots on arrival in high season.
Golf
There is no golf course at the hotel. The nearest option is Golf Club Palermo at Parco Airoldi, a 9 hole, par 32 course inside the city that welcomes visitors with a booked tee time. For a full day of championship golf, Rocco Forte has run a winter weekend package: two nights with breakfast at Villa Igiea, one day of unlimited golf for two at Verdura on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and a return transfer of about 1 hour 40 minutes each way. Clubs and buggies are not included, and extra rounds were 50 euros per person. It is the angle that earns the hotel a place in our golf hotels in Sicily guide. Check whether the offer is running for your dates, and read our Verdura Resort review if you are tempted to move on to the coast for a few nights.
Sea and boats
The private harbour below the gardens is the hotel’s quiet trump card. The concierge arranges boat trips and sailing days along the north coast, with Sicilian food on board, and you can swim off the rocks below the villa. Day trips to Cefalù and the Zingaro reserve are easy to organise.
What’s nearby

- Palermo’s old town: the Cathedral, the Palazzo dei Normanni with its Palatine Chapel, Teatro Massimo and the markets of Ballarò and the Vucciria, all a short shuttle or taxi ride away. Our guide to Palermo tours, cooking classes and day trips has the best ways to see them.
- Mondello: Palermo’s beach suburb, with its Liberty-style bathing establishment and seafood restaurants, about 15 minutes away.
- Monreale: the cathedral’s golden mosaics are one of the essential half-day trips from Palermo.
Villa Igiea vs other Sicilian luxury hotels
| Hotel | Location | Standout | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rocco Forte Villa Igiea | Palermo, on the bay | Art Nouveau palace, private harbour, pool, one sea-view tennis court, Irene Forte Spa | City culture with a resort feel |
| Rocco Forte Verdura Resort | Near Sciacca, south-west coast | 45 holes of golf, clay tennis club, 4,000 m² spa, private shoreline | Golfers, tennis players, active families |
| Grand Hotel Timeo | Taormina, east coast | Historic grand hotel beside the Greek Theatre, views of Etna and the sea | Romantic stays in a walkable town |
In short: Verdura is the sport resort, Timeo is the classic choice for Taormina (see our Grand Hotel Timeo review), and Villa Igiea is the one to pick when Palermo itself is the point of the trip.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits:
- Couples who want a historic grand hotel with a pool and garden in one of Italy’s great food cities.
- Culture travellers who like to retreat from the noise of the centre after a day in the markets and churches.
- Recreational tennis players who want lessons and a court with a view, rather than a full tennis club.
- Guests combining Palermo with Verdura, golf or a boat trip along the coast.
It does not suit:
- Travellers who want to walk out of the door into the old town every evening.
- Serious spa lovers looking for thermal pools and a large wellness area.
- Golfers who want a course on site, or players who need several courts and a tennis academy.
- Food lovers who need a Michelin-starred restaurant under the same roof.
Charlotte’s tip: aperitivo at home, dinner in town
The best hour at Villa Igiea is the one before dinner, on the Terrazza Bar as the light goes pink over Monte Pellegrino. Take the aperitivo there, then head into the old town for dinner, and keep Florio for the night you cannot leave the gardens. In spring, book a tennis slot before breakfast, when the bay is completely still.
Practical tips
- Booking: reserve tennis coaching, spa treatments and any boat day when you book the room, especially from May to October.
- Best rooms to request: a sea-view room or suite in the main villa for the full Liberty experience, or the Palazzina Donna Franca for terraces and space.
- Season: May, June, September and October balance warm sea, an open pool and comfortable sightseeing. Winter is quiet and mild, but confirm pool and restaurant opening with the hotel.
- Dress: relaxed by day, smart casual for Florio in the evening.
- Kids: children are welcome, babysitting is available on request and Rocco Forte runs a family programme. Ask the hotel what is offered on your dates.
- Pets: the Michelin Guide lists the hotel as pet-friendly, with possible fees. Confirm before you travel.
