In Puglia a championship golf course, a serious red wine appellation and a coastline of sea caves sit within a morning’s drive of each other. Around Savelletri di Fasano you can play among olive trees, taste Locorotondo whites half an hour inland and board a boat in Monopoli after lunch. Further south, Salento adds a second course near Lecce, the Primitivo and Negroamaro country, and two seas meeting at Santa Maria di Leuca.

The Fasano coast puts the golf course, the Valle d’Itria and Monopoli harbour within half an hour. June and September book up early.
The golf: two courses worth the trip

Puglia has only a handful of 18-hole courses; these two justify a trip. Both welcome visitors year round. The green fees we found were for earlier seasons and no 2026 rates were published where we could verify them, so check with the club.
San Domenico Golf, Savelletri di Fasano
San Domenico is the course most golfers come to Puglia for. It was designed by Andy Haggar with European Golf Design to USGA specifications, and plays as 18 holes, par 72, at around 6,360 metres from the back tees. The layout is open and links-like, among old olive trees with the sea in view, and it hosted the Challenge Tour Grand Final for eight years.
- Signature holes: the 3rd, a par 3 of more than 200 metres often played into the wind, and the 16th, a par 5 of around 560 metres that runs closest to the sea.
- Handicap: a valid handicap certificate is required; the published limit is 36.
- Buggies: electric carts, trolleys and electric trolleys can be hired.
- Season: open all year; book ahead. No weekly closing day is published, so check with the club.
Acaya Golf Club, near Lecce
Acaya sits between Lecce and the Adriatic, on the coast road from San Cataldo towards Otranto. Designed under the Hurdzan and Fry partnership, it is 18 holes, par 71, with an on-site hotel. Our research turned up slightly different lengths: one directory gives 5,702 metres from the yellow tees, another 5,695 metres from the club tees and 6,192 metres from the back. Check the scorecard with the club.
- Character: flat, walkable parkland with olive groves and more water on the back nine.
- Handicap: a valid handicap certificate from your home club is required. A handicap limit is not published, so check with the club.
- Buggies: electric carts for hire; walking is allowed.
- Season: open all year; no closing day published. About 20 minutes from Lecce.

The wine: Primitivo, Negroamaro and the whites of Locorotondo

Around Locorotondo, close to the Fasano coast, the speciality is a crisp white mainly from Verdeca and Bianco d’Alessano. Further south the reds take over: Primitivo di Manduria and Negroamaro around Salice Salentino. For background, see our guide to Italian wine regions.
Locorotondo: whites in the Valle d’Itria
Locorotondo is about 30 minutes inland from Savelletri, the easiest tasting to pair with San Domenico. Cantina MIR offers a visit of about an hour and a half through an 1860 building with cellars cut into the limestone, then a tasting of white, rosé and red wines with a local platter. Bookings need at least two people; visits are listed all year.
Manduria: the Primitivo museum
Produttori Vini Manduria, a cooperative founded in 1932, houses the Museo della Civiltà del Vino Primitivo in the nineteenth-century underground cisterns of its winery on Via Fabio Massimo in Manduria. A guided tour past old presses and carts ends with a Primitivo tasting. Visitors report tours in English, French, German and Italian, booked ahead by phone; hours and prices are not published in English, so check with the winery. Manduria is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Savelletri.
Salice Salentino: Leone de Castris
Leone de Castris is one of the oldest names in Salento. The estate traces its origins to 1665 and launched Five Roses in 1943, widely described as the first rosé bottled in Italy. Visits cover the historic offices, ageing cellar and family wine museum, then three wines chosen monthly, such as a Negroamaro Salice Salentino Riserva; longer versions add lunch. Minimum two people; visits are listed Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm; book ahead. It is roughly 30 minutes from Lecce and 40 from Manduria.
Near Manduria: Vespa Vignaioli and Gianfranco Fino
Vespa Vignaioli makes its wines at Masseria Li Reni, with a tasting corner on site; ask the hotel about visits for non-residents. Neighbouring Gianfranco Fino runs ES, a Michelin-listed restaurant; we could not confirm public cellar tours for 2026, so treat it as a dinner. Several hotels below appear in our guide to the best vineyard hotels and wine resorts in Italy.
The water: a day on a private boat

Puglia’s coast is low and rocky but riddled with sea caves. Most private days are on skippered motor boats, wooden gozzi or sailing yachts. Three stretches stand out.
Monopoli and Polignano a Mare
Monopoli harbour, next to the Charles V castle, is the closest departure point to the Fasano coast. The classic route runs north past cliffs and Saracen towers to Polignano a Mare, with a swim in front of the sea caves, including the Grotta Palazzese, and a pass by the cove of Lama Monachile. The short version takes about two hours; a half or full day adds swim stops. Polignano has its own marina at Cala Ponte. Trips typically run April to October.
Otranto
From Otranto’s harbour, boats head north to the coves of Baia dei Turchi, or south past Punta Palascia, Italy’s easternmost point, to Porto Badisco. Otranto is about 45 minutes from Lecce.
Santa Maria di Leuca
At the tip of the heel you choose between two seas. From the tourist port, routes run past Punta Meliso to Adriatic caves such as the Grotta del Soffio, then past Punta Ristola to Ionian caves including the Grotta del Diavolo and the Grotta del Fiume, with its freshwater spring. Skippered hire is commonly offered in three, six or nine hour blocks.
What a skippered charter usually includes
- Usually included: skipper, life jackets, a freshwater shower and a light aperitif of drinks and taralli.
- Check: fuel on longer days, lunch, snorkelling gear and mooring fees.
- Season and weather: April or May to October; routes change with the wind.
A sample four-day itinerary
Two bases, Savelletri then Salento. Driving times are approximate.
- Day 1, arrival: fly into Brindisi (about 45 to 50 minutes to Savelletri) or Bari (about 50 to 60 minutes). Range session and dinner by the sea.
- Day 2, golf and Locorotondo: early tee time at San Domenico, then about 30 minutes to Locorotondo for a tasting and a sunset walk.
- Day 3, Monopoli by boat, then south: about 15 minutes to Monopoli for a morning boat to the Polignano caves, then around 1 hour 15 minutes to Manduria for the Primitivo museum.
- Day 4, Negroamaro and Acaya: about 40 minutes to Leone de Castris for a tasting with lunch, then around 40 minutes to Acaya for an afternoon round. With a fifth day, drive about an hour south for a boat day at Leuca.
Comparison table: the courses at a glance
| Course | Area | Holes | Best for | Drive from base |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Domenico Golf | Savelletri di Fasano, Adriatic coast | 18, par 72 | Tour-level test with sea views, combining with Monopoli boat days and Locorotondo | Next door to a few minutes from Savelletri; about 1 hour from Lecce |
| Acaya Golf Club | Acaya, near Lecce, Salento | 18, par 71 | Relaxed parkland round, combining with Salice Salentino, Otranto and Leuca | About 20 minutes from Lecce; about 1 hour from Savelletri |
Best months, weather and practical tips
May, June and September are warm enough to swim from the boat and cool enough for golf. July and August bring heat and the highest rates. October still suits golf and wine, but boat days depend on the sea; both courses play all year.
- Handicap card: bring a valid certificate for both courses.
- Dress codes: standard golf attire with collared shirts; neither club publishes a detailed code in English, so check with the club.
- Transfers with clubs: hire a car big enough for golf bags, or ask the hotel for a minivan. Our Italy travel planner covers car hire and transfers in the south.
- Wind for sailing: northerly winds roughen the Adriatic side, southerly winds the Ionian. Keep the boat date flexible.
- Wine and driving: use a driver on tasting days.
Charlotte’s tip: tee off early, sail late
Book the first tee times at San Domenico and keep the afternoon for the boat: the Polignano caves are quieter once morning trips return, and you are back in Monopoli for an aperitivo. Keep a spare day so wind moves the boat rather than cancels it.

Palazzo Daniele (Gagliano del Capo)
A nineteenth-century palazzo in Gagliano del Capo, a short drive from the port of Santa Maria di Leuca, with a seasonal pool.
